XC Countdown 2022: #2 Hampden Academy Boys

Maine MileSplit 2022 XC Team Countdown

With the calendar switching to August soon we wanted to switch gears from the track to the trails to get ready for the upcoming cross-country season. Athletes around the state are hitting the roads and trails building up a strong base in hopes of a successful cross-country in 2022, with the hopes of lifting the state championship as a team in November the ultimate goal. Our plan is to highlight who we think are the top 25 returning girls and boys xc teams over the next three weeks. Thanks to Cheverus XC/track coach Nick Denari for volunteering his time and efforts to put this countdown together.

Harrison Shain had a big 2021, he's back looking to help the Broncos to another team title.

2022 Outlook: Hampden Academy will sets their sights on back-to-back state titles this fall after winning the Class A crown in 2021. They return 5 of their 7 State Meet competitors, but they graduated Abbott Valentine, the 2021 individual champion. Charlie Collins will look to fill that absence and could do so in a significant way. He is absolutely a contender for the Class A individual title. He is the 2nd highest placing returner from last year's State Meet, and he followed that up with an even better track season that saw him run 4:21 for 1600m and 9:39 for 3200m. Hampden is a deep team, with their top 7 returners all under 19 minutes. If the Broncos have a weakness, it would that their roster drops off a little after their top three runners. If they want to defend that title, they will need a couple of their athletes that weren't scoring last year to take a leap forward into the mid 17s.
