As expected the Orono Red Riots swept the Class C outdoor track and field titles at Cony High School. The boys came into the meet as the heavy favorites, and tallied 105 points to secure the victory by thirty-six points over Lisbon. The girls came into the meet seeded for 113, and scored an impressive 121 points to win the programs 13 outdoor state titles by 42 points over North Yarmouth Academy.
The Orono girls set the tone in the first running event on the track as they cruised to a 12 second victory in the 4x800 with Ruth White on anchor able to conserve energy. White would go on to finish second in the 1600m for the second year in a row to Houlton's Teanne Ewings running 5:06.61 to Ewing's 5:04.09. In her speciality the 3200m she would repeat as champion setting a new Class C state meet record of 10:44.75, breaking her year old mark of 10:46.38.
White's sister Clara provided a win in the pole vault with her 8-6 clearance, she would come back to finish fourth in the 3200m with a personal best 12:15.55.
Orono got a victory in the 1600m race walk from freshman Maya Boyington as she cracked eight minutes for the first time with her 7:50.80 effort. She would go on to run 2:37.70 in the 800 to finish third to add six more points. Speaking of the 800m, Orono showed great quality and depth as they finished 2,3,4 with Ellie Brooks (2:32.53) finishing as the runner-up, the aforementioned Boyington in third, and a fourth place finish from Katherine Kohtala (2:38.20).
In the field events, junior Dez Seeley threw 32-2 1/4 to win the shot put. Sophie Hepler scored third place in the javelin (96-2) and third in the discus (93-9) for 12 more points.
While in the sprints junior Anna Molloy contributed a fourth place finish in the 100m (13.07) before coming back to finish as the runner-up over 200m (26.86) with a personal best. Molloy would add a fourth place finish in the pole vault (8-0) and fifth place in the long jump (14-5.5).
MCI senior Emma Burr won three events and set two state meet records, and only a false start likely cost her four individual event victories. Burr was outstanding in the 100m hurdles as she clocked 14.77 in the final to set a new Class C state meet record as she eclipsed the 14.6 hand time of Meg Muller. Her time in the 300m hurdles also broke Muller's former record of 44.7h as the she clocked 44.82 to move to fifth fastest performer in state history. Emma wasn't done as she came back in the 200m to set another personal best of 25.51 to finish the day with 30 points.
North Yarmouth Academy junior Sarah Moore helped the Panthers to the runner-up trophy with a pair of wins in the jumps. Moore cleared (5-2) to win the high jump easily, she added a 17-1 3/4 leap to take the long jump by over foot. She would add eight more points with a 34-4 1/4 effort in the triple jump and contributed six more points with a third place finish in the 100m (13.04)
Ellie Leech of Seacoast Christian won the javelin with a toss of 114-8 while George Stevens Academy junior Maranda Pert edged Leech to take the discus with a throw of 104-2. Senior Rose Jenkins of Kents Hill won the triple jump with a strong 35-6 1/4 jump. Jenkins also finished as the runner-up in both hurdle races. Teanne Ewings won the 1600m for the second year in a row as she beat Ruth White of Orono as she sped to a 73 second last lap to clock 5:04.09. She would come back in the 800m to add a second victory running 2:30.67. Veronica Mercier of Bangor Christian took the 100m (12.91) while Allie Kimball of Winslow took the 400m (61.09)
