The York girls entered the Class B outdoor track and field championship as slight underdogs as they looked to complete the triple crown by winning cross-country, indoor and outdoor track and field state titles. Led by distance ace Cary Drake the Wildcats left no doubt who they the top team was they dominated the competition en route to 98 points, and a 26 point victory over Freeport.
RESULTS
Things got off to a great start for the Wildcats as they scored ten points in the 4x800 with a 10:00.97 effort. Drake ran a leg on the winning relay (2:20), then came back to take the 1600m in 5:05.54 as she cruised to a 15 second victory. With her day halfway done she hopped back on the track in the 800m where she opened her first lap in 69 before running a negative split to clock 2:17.71. Closing out her day Drake capped off her third individual win of the day running a personal best 11:12.55 in the 3200m to win the event by 40 seconds.
The 800m was a key event for York. Besides Drake's win they got a third place finish from freshman Zoe Carroll (2:26.01) who came in the eighth seed and fourth place effort from junior Molly Kenealy (2:26.33). Kenealy had a busy day as well finishing third in both the 1600m (5:25.69) and 3200m (12:20.45).
Freshman Karianna Hulstrom added a fourth place finish in both the 100m & 300m hurdles while classmate Jillian Holland was the runner-up in the 400m (61.74). Holland and Carroll also ran on the runner-up 4x400m relay.
Gardiner senior Ashlyn Poulin repeated as champion in the 1600m race walk shattered the Class B state meet record by 14 seconds with her winning effort of 7:12.15. Her time just missed the state all-time best in the event.
Senior Grace Willey of Old Town won the 100m hurdles (17.07) while Amelia Vandongen of MDI won the 300m hurdles (48.33).
Freshman Abby Noble of Yarmouth won the 100m title in 13.03 and came back to win the 200m crown as well in 27.27. In the high jump Freeport senior Avery Baker-Schlendering cleared 5-4 to win the crown while in the long jump Kara Anderson of Waterville leaped 16-2 to win the long jump. Erskine Academy sophomore Sadie Pierce took the triple jump with a 33-11 1/2 effort.
Morse sophomore Shealyn Brochu repeated as the 400m champion as she clocked 60.20, she added a runner-up finish in the 800m as well with her 2:21.65. Junior Sarah Ouellette cleared 11-0 to easily win the pole vault.
In the throws Yana Montell of Gardiner toss the javelin out to 114-3 to take the victory. Olivia Pratt of MDI won the shot put with a 34-3 toss, she added a second victory in the discus with a personal best effort of 105-7.
Freeport won the 4x100m (52.57) and the 4x400m (4:24.78) relays.
