The extra three day wait for the Class B outdoor track and field championship to finish was well worth it for the Leavitt Hornets. The conclusion of the meet happened indoors at Bates College on Tuesday afternoon as the athletes competed in the pole vault and the high jump events that had were postponed on Saturday due to the rainy conditions. Leavitt was looking for their first outdoor track and field title in school history while York hoped to continue their long history of success. The Hornets had 79 points entering Tuesday while York had 73.
After the pole vault was scored York gained one point to close to within five points with the high jump bar being moved up to six feet with nine competitors remaining including one from Leavitt and one from York. Sophomore Stephen Pierre of Leavitt made his final attempt at 6 feet to move on with six others to 6-2. With Gavin Davis of York clearing on his first attempt the pressure was on Pierre who missed his first two attempts. Pierre who had to adjust his mark throughout the meet came through with a clutch third attempt clearance at 6-2 that sealed the first state title for the Hornets.
Besides the high jump, Pierre provided runner-up finishes in the long jump (21-2) and 110m hurdles (15.86) while adding five more points in the 300m hurdles with a fourth place effort of 43.07.
Freshman Mason Henderson had a pair of runner-up finished in the 100m (11.14) and 200m (22.82). Henderson also provided a leg on the third place 4x100m relay and the fifth place 4x400m relay.
Sophomore Landon Myers added a runner-up effort in the discus with a personal best 131-0 toss as he moved up from his fifth seed. His classmate Kavon Graham-Jones added a seventh place finish with a 115-2 effort after coming in the 15th best thrower in the field.
Senior Dayton Calder was the other key cog in the wheel for the Hornets. Calder finished third in the 100m (11.42), and sixth in the 200m (23.83) plus a leg on the 4x100m relay.
Corbin Flewelling a senior from Old Town won the long jump (21-9 1/2) and triple jump (44-1) before taking the high jump on Tuesday with a new personal and Coyotes school record of 6-5 1/4 in the high jump.
Freeport distance standout Henry Horne won the distance triple as he took the1600m (4:24.01) kicking to victory with a 61.09 last lap, 800m (2:01.83) where he negative split the race 63.95-57.88 to move up ten spots in the second lap. In the 3200m Horne did it again crushing the final lap in 62.43 to pull away for a seven second victory in 9:52.57.
York senior Matt Charpentier set a new Class B state meet record in the shot put with his personal best toss of 60-11 1/4 to repeat as champion. In the discus Charpentier won for the third year in a row with a toss of 158-8. Teammate Kai Dunn won the javelin for a Wildcat sweep in the throwing events with a throw of 148-4.
In the hurdles Nolan Garey a senior from Poland took the 110m hurdles in 14.64 and added the 300m hurdle title in 42.52.
MDI sprint star Miles Burr won the 100m (11.00) and set a Class B state meet record in the 200m (22.18). Burr finished as the runner-up in the 400m (51.37) and third place in the triple jump (42-0).
Freeport pole vaulter Reece Perry returned from injury to clear 14 feet to win the event while Morse senior Andrew Card repeated as the 400m champion clocking 50.57. Lincoln Academy sophomore Roan Donaghy won the 1600m race walk with a time of 7:40.15 as he edged Thomas Leggat-Barr of Greely by .01 in the closest race of the day.
In the relays, Yarmouth won the 4x100 (45.40), York took the 4x400 (3:35.69) and John Bapst won the 4x800 (8:22.72).
