Salute to Seniors: Lia Traficonte (Greely HS)

When and how did you get into track and field?

I got involved with track when I was 4 through the summer USATF program.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

I always compete with myself and try to beat my personal records.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My 2023 Indoor Class B State Meet at Bates when I got 2 PRs.

How has track and field impacted your life?

Track has taught me to train hard and always strive for improvement. I have also learned the value of encouraging my teammates to do their best for themselves and the team.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Peer pressure. Most of my friends played Lacrosse in the spring and their coach tried to recruit me. It was a tough decision but I knew I would be happier competing in track.

How do you prepare for competitions?

I eat healthily, stay hydrated, and try to get plenty of sleep the night before a meet

What influence has your coach had on your high school career?

I love hiking, skiing, and socializing with friends.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of track and field?

My jumping coach has taught me so much! Without Coach Chick's dedication and encouragement, I'm not sure if I would have improved as much as I have. Head Coach Dowling was also influential in helping with my sprints and fostering a supportive community on the team.

What are your college plans?

Bates College.

What are your long-term goals?

I would love to compete for Bates for all four years and earn a Master's degree after my Bachelor's degree.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

My teammates, coaches, and family for all of their support over the years.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

Stick with what you love and don't get discouraged. Keep working hard and you will keep improving!
