Salute to Seniors: Grace Gray (Cape Elizabeth HS)

When and how did you get into track and field?

2021 my sophomore year. I had planned to play lacrosse but Covid hit my freshman spring and everything was canceled. I had Mr. Worthley and Mr. Lupien as teachers and liked them so much decided to run outdoor track as a sophomore! (they are the coaches)

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

The competition in Class B (in Maine really) is very strong. I honestly went into every race trying to do my best. I admire all of my competitors but honestly loved being at the start line chatting with others and cheering on each other's successes

What was your greatest accomplishment?

I was very proud of my 2nd place finish in the 200 and 3rd place finish in the 55m at States Indoor this year! I hadn't done indoor because I played basketball as a freshman and was on the swim team for 2 years.

How has track and field impacted your life?

Track has impacted my life in so many different ways. Having amazing coaches on an inclusive team made going to practice so much fun each day. I think the culture of Cape Elizabeth track and track and field, in general, is highly supportive. It is great to be a part of it.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Obstacles included having the flu the week leading up to states, and some minor injuries throughout the season last year. I've actually been quite fortunate.

How do you prepare for competitions?

We always have a team dinner and love to glitter up the whole team:)

What influence has your coach had on your high school career?

My coaches are the reason I ran track and I am so thankful for them.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of track and field?

I played 4 years of field hockey in HS, was all-state for 2 years, and was class B player of the year this senior year. I also love to ski.

What are your college plans?

Bates College and I'll be running indoor and outdoor track.

What are your long-term goals?

In the long term, I would like to train for the 400, and in school, I plan to do the pre-med track.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

All of my high school coaches. I am a three-sport athlete and have been fortunate to have the most supportive coaches. Also to my Bates coaches Johnson and Feeley. They are a big reason that I chose Bates over another. They make me feel supported even as a senior. They came and cheered us on at the State meet in Freeport which was a downpour!

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

Go out and do your best and cheer on others for their successes too! Also, put in the time. The results are worth it!
