Brooks Northeast Regional XC Championship Maine Preview

Maine Entries in 2025 Brooks Northeast XC Regional Championship

A small but determined group of Maine athletes will line up at historic Franklin Park in Boston on Saturday morning, each chasing the same dream: a top-ten finish and a ticket to San Diego for the Brooks XC National Championship.

Leading the way on the boys' side is Samuel Laverdiere, the home-schooled standout who competed for Lake Region last fall and placed 14th at the 2025 XC Northeast Regional. Laverdiere has recent experience on the Franklin Park layout-he ran an 8k there earlier this season, clocking 24:29 with a 15:04 split at 5k-giving him valuable insight as he looks to race his way into the national field.

Class B champion Alex Gilbert of Freeport is another Mainer to watch. Following an undefeated season in state competition and a strong showing at New England's, Gilbert has the ability to mix it up with the region's elite and push for a top-20 finish or better.

On the girls' side, junior Karen Higgins of Lincoln Academy headlines the Maine contingent. The Class B runner-up this fall, Higgins has been one of the state's most consistent performers and will look to translate that momentum onto the regional stage. She'll be joined by Freeport senior Lucy Huggett, the Class B third-place finisher who narrowly missed All-New England honors two weeks ago with a 27th-place effort.

With proven front-runners and rising talent on both sides, Maine's group heads to Franklin Park ready to make its mark.
