Cumberland County Championships: Cheverus Boys / Scarborough Girls take top spots

The cumberland county schools of the SMAA put on a show on a cool windy night at Scarborough, as there were State leaders galore in the relays and field events. The Cheverus Boys won as did the Scarborough girls.  Here's the recap

Cheverus girls 4x800- 9:58.1 behind a 2:23 split from Emily Durgin

Cheverus boys 4x800- 8:15.16 behind a 2:01 carry from Jack Terwilliger

Sprints Recap

Girls

100m Hannah Lyons (Cheverus) won a photo finish over Scarborough's Nicole Kirk, both were timed in 13.60. The 100's were run into a strong headwind, which slowed the times considerably.  RACE VIDEO

 

200m Nicole Kirk avenged her defeat to Lyons in the 100m by easily sprinting to the victory in the half lapper, clocking 27.14 to Lyons's 27.92  RACE VIDEO

400m Emily Tolman (Scarborough) cruised around the oval in 60.73 over Cheveru's Taylor Spang 63.67  RACE VIDEO

 

Boys

100m  Jake Willis (Gorham) trumped the field in 11.68 to win over Scarborough's John Gonzalez 11.79  RACE VIDEO

 

200m Willis made it 2 for 2, with a 22.8 handtime win over Damien Shepard (Windham) 23.2  RACE VIDEO

 

400m  Cam Stevens (Gorham) the defending state champ proved he'll be ready to defend, clokcing 50.8,  Cheverus's Tim Woods ran 51.31 out of the first heat to nab 2nd, Conor Sullivan of Scarborough broke 52, running 51.9 for 3rd place.  RACE VIDEO


Distance Recap

 Boys

800m  The pace went out rather slow 64-65 at the 400m but it didn't say slow for long as with 300m to go Andrew Snyder found another gear and only Windham's Julian Gazzeloni could go with him. Snyder would hold on to win in 2:02.14, while Gazzeloni was 2:02.49. Apparently with 180 to go there was some bumping, a Julian G was disqualified for stepping on the white line for 3 strides, but that decision was overturned later.  RACE VIDEO

 

1600m Cheverus showed it's strength by finishing 1-2 behind a re-emergence from Jack Terwilliger who tore away from the field over the last 800m, running 4:26.58, his teammate Taylor Dundas 4:29.24 came back to pass Windham's Julian Gazzeloni 4:29.48 in the last few meters of the race  RACE VIDEO

 

 3200m Cheverus completed the sweep of the distance events when Jack Terwilliger won his 2nd individual race of the day, as he crushed the last 1k of the race coming from 3rd place to easily seal the win. Jack's time was 10:00.59, his last mile was under 4:50. Scarborough freshman Robert Hall closed well for 2nd 10:08.48, (5:11-4:57) to hold off a strong finish from Jeremy Earl (Gorham) 10:09.68  RACE VIDEO

 

Girls

800m Emily Durgin (Cheverus) stepped on the pedal the whole race as she tried to shake the challenge of Gorham's Audrey Adkinson. They came through the 400m in 68.5-69. Adkinson hung tough until Durgin used her strength to pull away to win in 2:19.91, #2 time in the state in 2010. While Adkinson ran a personal best 2:22.1, #3 time in the state.

 

1600m Fiona Hendry (Cheverus) held off a strong challenge from Deering's Ella Ramonas to win the 1600m, as they two ripped 5:13.13 to 5:14.74, for the #3 & #4 times in Class A 

3200m  Emily Durgin (Cheverus) completed the Cheverus distance sweep as she won her 2nd individual event, taking it from the gun and clocking a sub 11 performance as she stopped the clock at 10:58.97. Cheverus showed great distance depth taking the first 4 spots with all girls under 11:52.59

Girls

100m  Scarborough went 1-2 behind Jenny Snyder's 17.17, teammate Emilia Scheemaker 17.54 was 2nd RACE VIDEO

 

300m Sarah Perkins (Gorham) ran an impressive 47.52, the 2nd fastest in Class A, Reilly Sullivan (Windham) was the runner-up with a fine 48.43, teammate Hannah Damron also went under 50 with a 49.73 RACE VIDEO

 

 Boys

110m  Patrick Ciez (Windham)  hurdled his way to victory into a strong headwind 16.01, while Scarborough's Ross Thomas 16.34 took the runner-up spot  RACE VIDEO

 

300m  South Portland's Jamison Esquibel had a strong last 100m to over take Windham's Patrick Ciez,  Esquibel was timed in 41.90, while Ciez clocked 42.28 RACE VIDEO

 

Relays

Girls

4x100m Scarborough cruised to victory in the 4x100 stopping the clock at a 51.83 to hold back a challenege frim Cheverus 52.09

 

4x400m Scarborough capped off the night with a fine performance in the 4x400, running to a new state leading 4:09.85, highlighted by anchor leg Emily Tolman 60.x carry.  Cheverus ran well to finish 2nd 4:17.19 and held off a strong push from Gorham 4:18.22  RACE VIDEO

 

4x800m Cheverus started the meet off with a state leading 9:58.1, becoming the first team under 10 this spring. The were led by a 2:23 carry from Emily Durgin. Scarborough ran a seasonal best 10:11.62 for 2nd.

 

 Boys

 

4x100m   Scarborough got the stick around the track first, finishing with a 44.97. Cheverus came across 2nd with anchor leg James Rutter, 45.34 holding off a challenege from South Portland 45.55 RACE VIDEO

 

4x400m  What a race to cap the evening off as Cheverus finished off the win with a new state leading 3:29.5 in the 4x400m behind fast carries from Tim Woods and Andrew Snyder. Scarborough clocked a seasonal best and #2 time in the state 3:31.26 RACE VIDEO

4x800m Cheverus started off on the right foot as they crusied to an easy victory and new state leading time in the 4x800 8:15.16 behind a 2:01 carry from Jack Terwilliger. RACE VIDEO
