2010 Class A Boys XC Preview
Last Fall the Western Maine Class A XC scene was dominated by two familiar foes, Cheverus & Scarborough. The Stags proved to be the best team in the region winning regional and state titles. For the Stags it was there 18th Class A XC title, and first since 2001. Fast forward to the fall XC season of 2010. Scarborough comes into the season as a slight favorite to win the title, but there are several teams that have the firepower to challenge them. The Mustangs of Massabesic ran well in 2009, earning a runner-up finish in the Western Maine regional. The Gorham Rams will be another team with title aspirations in 2010, after a 4th place finish last year, the Rams return the best 1-2 combo in the conference.
For the Red Storm of Scarborough, they return a strong nucleus from a state-runner team in 2009. Gone is top runner Nate Hathaway, who has moved on to the University of New Hampshire, but returning is #2 runner & 4th place finisher in 2009, Nick Morris (pictured left). Morris was huge for the Red Storm down the stretch last fall, and should be even stronger this fall. The key for Scarborough will be in #2-#4 runners, which should consist of Sophomore Robert Hall (23rd in 2009), & seniors Zach Brown (24th in 2009) & Tom Hague (26th in 2009). The only question mark for the Red Storm is the #5 runner, the competition is wide open for the spot with any number of athletes competing for the spot. including some incoming freshman.
Massabesic was the Western Maine runner-up in 2010, They will be led by a strong 1-2 consisting of seniors Peter LePage (14th in 2009) and Jacob Brooks (13th in 2009) leading the way. Lepage had a strong outdoor campaign that saw him run 10:02 for the 3200. #3-#5 runners for the Mustangs are very solid seniors Zachary Cost (38th in 2009) & Nate Harris and sophomore Cody Vachon, if one of the three from last year can emerge they will make Massabesic even more dangerous this fall.
The Gorham Rams are another team with title aspirations this fall, the Rams arguably have the best 1-2 in the conference with Logan Marshall (7th in 2009) & Jeremy Earl(20th in 2009). Marshall has been aboard for 6+ months so not sure how much running he has gotten in. Earl (Pictured right) had an off race last fall, he rebounded at the state meet to finish 12th and he also had a strong outdoor track season. #3 runner Andy Turner (28th in 2009) will be a key for the Rams. Gorham will need sophomore Alex Thuotte and junior Joe Deroy to emerge to challenge for the top spot.
Other Teams
Kennebunk: The Rams are the 4th best team on paper. They will be led by Chris Dunn (19th in 2009) who should be one of the top individuals. Dunn had a great outdoor campaign that saw him run 9:59.96 for 3200. Also look for Cameron Wiewal (21st in 2009) to have a strong impact on Kennebunk's success.
Deering: While the Rams don't have an indivdual runner that should contend for the title, they do have a strong pack of 4 returners led by junior Tom Dean (27th in 2009).
Cheverus: The Stags were hit hard by graduation losing 4 of their top 5. Back is top individual returner Jack Terwilliger (1st in 2009). Look for #2 Lukas Temple to be much improved. The Stags still have enough to make it to the state meet, they may also pick up a few key freshman.
South Portland: The Red Riots will be led by Matt Clement (16th in 2009) this fall. South Portland will look for the Redstone brothers to have an impact as well for Coach Andrew Lupein.
Marshwood: The Hawks #1 returner is Elijah Ober (29th in 2009). The Hawks should battle for a spot at the state meet this fall.
Sanford: Junior Bryant Perkins (18th in 2009) is the top returner for the Redskins. Sanford is a young team looking to improve in 2010.
Biddeford: The Tigers #1 returner this fall is Joe Drew (45th in 2009). Biddeford was a young team last year under first year coach Roert Gomez, they'll be looking to improve on their 1th place finish in 2009
Thornton Academy: The Trojans will be one of the youngest teams in the league. Junior Bryce Fedder is there top returner.
Windham: Leading the way for the Eagles will be Keegan Brennan (34th in 2009). Windham finished 5th in 2009, but graduated their top 2 runners.
Westbrook: The Blue Blazes finished 15th in 2009. so they have no place to go but up in 2010. #1 runner Glenn Emery rteurns from an injury that hampered him at the end of last year.

Individuals
Last year's individual champion Jack Terwilliger (Cheverus pictured left) is back to defend his title. Jack won't have his teammates on his back this year but then again will anyone be able to stay in contact with the senior is the real question. If Jack can stay healthy, and with his breathing issues under control 2010 could be the year of "Terwilliger". Jack took his running to a new level this spring, running right behind Will Geoghegan in the 1600 & 3200, while clocking times of 4:15.6 for 1600m & 9:22.99 for 2 mile.
There are a few talented runners that will be chasing Jack this fall. Headlining those would be Nick Morris (Scarborough), who was 4th last year, breaking 17 at Twin Brook twice. Morris went on to finish 10th in the state meet. Morris more of a mid-distance specialist on the track had a
strong spring running pr's 400m-3200m, including a leg on the fastest 4x400 team in the state.
Gorham's duo of Logan Marshall (pictured right) & Jeremy Earl should be at the front of the pack this fall too. Marshall finished 7th last fall and followed that up with an 11th place finish at the state meet. Marshall has been aboard with his family since this winter, and it's unknown how much training he's been able to do while away, this could have an effect on his season. Earl emerged last fall as one of the top harriers, he finished 20th in the Western Regional after a subpar race, he rebounded at the state meet running a minute faster, 16:56 and placing 12th. Jeremy played hoops this winter then had a strong outdoor season, that saw him pr at the both 1600m & 3200m
A couple of runners that should be on everyone's radar are Bryant Perkins (Sanford) & Chris Dunn (Kennebunk). Perkins finished 18th last fall, earning a trip to the state meet. Bryant
emerged this spring as a real threat on the track at the 3200, where he consistently ran at or below 10 minutes, ending the season at the Class A state meet with a 7th place finish with a new personal best of 9:51.57. Dunn placed 19th last fall in the Western Maine
Regional earning himself a trip to the state meet where he finished 48th. On the track this spring Dunn continued to improve throughout the season, capped off by an 11th place finish in the 3200 at the state meet, where he broke 10 minutes for the first time, clocking 9:59.96
