2010 Class B Girls XC Preview

For the last four years in Eastern Maine Class B girls the team title has been won by either John Bapst (2009) or Mt. Desert Island (2006-2008), 2010 should be no different as once again the two teams come back looking like the strongest teams in the region.
Last fall the John Bapst Crusaders (Photo left by Sub5.com) dominated the rest of Eastern Maine on there way to the title, they won by 31 points over runner-up MDI. Bapst returns 5 of their top 7 from a squad that put all 5 of their scoring runners in the top 15, an impressive feat. Leading the way will be sisters Adrienne Carmack (7th in 2009) & Mary Carmack (9th in 2009). With a strong and talented supporting cast of junior Sarah Dickens (13th in 2009), & seniors Laura Donovan (15th in 2009) & Jennie Wainer
(58th in 2009), Bapst is stocked and loaded for a repeat in 2010.
The 2009 runner-up MDI Trojans will be looking to challenge Bapst's for the Eastern Maine crown this fall. MDI has had plenty of success winning 3 of out the last 4 years. The Trojans have a young teams with 3 sophomores leading the way. Malia Demers (6th in 2009 pictured right photo by Sub5.com) led the way last fall, she was anchored by fellow classmates Domnique Hessert (16th in 2009) & Amelia Kief (17th in 2009). Also expected to be in the top 5 are seniors Chelsey Curran (26th in 2009) & Kailyn Russell (36th in 2009). This is a top notch program year in and year, and 2010 should be much of the same.
While John Bapst & MDI are expected to battle it out for the top spot, Medomak Valley (5th in 2009) & Ellsworth (3rd in 2009) are both teams that should be very good in 2010 as well, whether or not they can challenge for the top spot remains to be seen.
Other Teams
Medomak Valley: The Panthers ran to a 5th place finish in 2009. They return a strong squad this fall led by senior Gwen Moiles (5th in 2009).
Ellsworth: The Eagles were 3rd a year ago. They have a solid core returning led by senior Brianne Dunn (3rd in 2009)
Winslow: The Black Raiders placed 6th last fall earning the final spot in the state meet. They'll contend for another spot in 2010, and will look to improve their place. Top returner is sophomore Molly Schassberger (4th in 2009)
Hampden Academy: The Broncos missed a spot in the state meet by 4 points last fall, they'll be hungry in 2010 to earn a spot. Senior Ally Becker (19th in 2009) & sophomore Kylee Parker (21st in 2009) will lead the way
Caribou: The Vikings were 9th last fall just 9 points away from earning a trip to the state meet. Senior Dayna Michaud (20th in 2009) is the top returner.
Old Town: The Coyotes were 10th a year ago. They return the defending individual champion Dacie Manion
Erskine Academy: Erskine finished 12th a year ago, so they are looking to improve of that finish in 2010, which is a good possibility. Leading the way is sophomore Paige Grady (30th in 2009)
Belfast: The Lions didn't have 5 runners cross the finish line last fall. Junior Abigail Wessels (11th in 2009) will be the #1 runner this fall.
Hermon: The Hawks were 9th last fall. Top returner is senior Katie Feeney (54th in 2009)
Camden Hills: The Windjammers ran to a 9th place finish in 2009. Senior Rachel Brown (51st in 2009) is the the fastest returner from the regional meet.
Waterville: The Purple Panthers didn't have 5 runners cross the finish line last year. #1 returner is senior Courtney Williams (56st in 2009)

Individuals
The race for the individual title in Eastern Maine Class B girls should be one of the best races in 2010. With the top 7 returning from last year and 12 of the top 15, there are several talented girls with a shot at glory. With this many talented athletes returning the competition should be intense.
Defending champion Dacie Manion (Old Town pictured left)), a senior is back looking to make it two titles in a row. Last fall Manion triumphed by 4 seconds over Alecia Palmer(Presque Isle). Manion followed up her Eastern Maine title with a 3rd place in the
state meet, once again leading the east. She continued her strong fall with a 31st place finish at the New England meet. Manion doesn't run track, so it's hard to know if she improved, but if she runs anything like last fall, she'll be right there in the end.
Last year's runner-up senior Alecia Palmer (Presque Isle pictured right) had a very strong run at the regional last fall, falling just 4 seconds short of the victory. That should give her extra motivation in 2010. Palmer finished 11th at the state meet, and followed that up with a 119th finish at the New Englands, like Manion, Palmer only runs xc.
Ellsworth senior Brianne Dunn is another harrier to watch out for this fall. Dunn ran to a 3rd place finish in 2009. Dunn had another strong run at the state meet, earning an 8th place finish. On the track, this winter Brianne finished 10th in the 2 mile, while her outdoor season was cut short due to an injury. When healthy Dunn proved she could run with the best, look for more of that this fall.
