 Class B Girls Western Maine

Cape Elizabeth has won an unprecedented 7 straight Western Maine titles, and 2010 looks to be the same old as the Capers come into the season as the heavy favorites to make it 8 in a row! Leading the way for coach Mary Ann Doss will be the senior duo of Rachel Nichols (4th in 2009) & Kelsey Barton (6th in 2009). Cape has both quality and excellent depth, expect some fast times from the supporting cast as well. Sophomore Emma Inhorn (10th in 2009) had a strong freshman year, and with a year under her belt should be ready for even bigger things in 2010. Junior Catherine Tierney (17th in 2009) battled health issues last fall, if healthy she should improve on her performance, and sophomore

Ellen Best (30th in 2009) should round out the top 5. The have some strong incoming freshman as well.

Look for Falmouth to have one of the top teams in the region, after a 4th place finish in2009, the Yachtswomen return 5 of their top 7 from a year ago, including their top 2 harriers from the regional meet. They were a very young team last fall, so with a year of experience under their belts they should be ready for a strong 2010.  Senior Maggie Parrish (22nd in 2009) is the fastest returner for Falmouth. A strong group of sophomores Meg Palombo(19th in 2009), Abby Payson (27th in 2009) & Molly Ryan give Falmouth lots of quality along with junior Emily Rand (34th in 2009).

The York Wildcats finished as the runner-ups in 2009, they return a squad that will be battling for a top 3 spot this fall. Like Falmouth they bring back 5 of their top 7, including their #1 Michaela Swiatek (5th in 2009 pictured right). The depth for the Wildcats will be important, and they should have a tight pack #2-#5 with sophomore Nina Boutin (26th in 2009), juniors Brianna Eaton (25th in 2009) & Mallory Evans (21st in 2009), & senior Liz Ferland (33rd in 2009). All were in the top 7 last year so experience won't be an issue in the championship meets.

Other Teams

Greely: The Rangers placed 6th last year earning the last spot in the state meet. Junior Melissa Jacques (18th in 2009) is the top returner

Maranacook: The Black Bears were 3rd in the regional last fall, they'll be looking to make another trip to the state meet in 2010. Two-time defending individual champion junior Abby Mace leads the way

Yarmouth: The Clippers were 7th last fall missing out of the state meet by one spot. They'll be aiming to move up and make it to the big dance in 2010. Senior Chloe Sarapas (13th in 2009) is the #1 returner for Yarmouth

Fryeburg Academy:  Fryeburg didn't have 5 runners cross the finish line last fall, so hopefully they can reverse that in 2010.  They will have a very young team led by sophomore Jennifer Prince (49th in 2009) is the fastest returner from the regional meet

Leavitt: The Hornets finished 9th a year ago. Sophomore Lucy Knowlton (38th in 2009) is the top returner

Lake Region: The Lakers finished 11th last fall, they'll look to improve on that in 2010. Sophomore Kari Eldridge is the fastest returner for Lake Region, she missed the regional meet last year with injury

Teams without 5 returning runners: Wells, Poland, Lincoln Academy, Gray New Gloucester, Gardiner

Individuals

Two-time defending champion Abby Mace (Maranacook pictured left) is back looking to make it 3 for 3 in her high school career. Mace has also won they last two Class B state championships. Last year Mace dominated the field winning by over a minute, this year may be much of the same. Abby showed she's has good fitness already with her strong effort at the Beach to Beacon where she clocked 38:36 for 10k. Mace finished 10th in the New England last fall & 21st in the Footlocker Northeast race. No doubt Mace will be looking to duplicate her in state success and have that transfer over to the national scene as well in 2010. On the track this spring Abby won the 800m, 1600m & 3200m at the Class C outdoor state meet, Mace went on to finish 11th in the New Englands in the 1600m clocking a lifetime best of 5:06.95.

Others expected to be top individuals in 2010 are senior Kendra Lobley (3rd in 2009 pictured right). Lobley went on to finish 7th in the state meet last fall, and had a good indoor and outdoor track season. Kendra added a state championship in the 800m indoors and won the 800m outdoors as well. She finished up with an 11th place finish at the New England setting a new personal best 2:21.01 Cape Elizabeth senior Rachel Nichols (4th in 2009) has been in the top 6 the last two years will be looking for her best finish in 2010. Nichols also matched her 4th place finish from the regional meet at the state meet, where she had a great day, running her personal best at Twin Brook, 20:11. Nichols added a state title over 1600m indoors along with a runner-up finish in the 800m, while outdoors Nichols adding a runner-up finish in the 800m. York senior Michaela Swiatek (5th in 2009) is another top harrier in the region who went on to finish 5th in the state meet last fall. She showed she has put in a strong summer of training with her 41:20 clocking at Beach to Beacon. Swiatek scored in 3 events at the state meet as she sacrificed individual times to try to win a team title, outdoors she finished 2nd in the 1600m and 3rd in the 800m.
