Class C Girls Eastern Maine

Eastern Maine Class C girls team race should be another close one in 2010. Last Fall the Orono Red Riots edged Greenville by 3 points to capture the title. On paper with returning runners from last fall George Stevens Academy and Orono appear equal, freshman or new runners to either of these teams could sway things in one direction though.

Last fall only the top 3 teams made the state meet, and coming into 2010 only 4 teams have 5 returning runners based on who ran last fall. Hopefully some of these squads will be able to get 5 healthy runners to the starting line, so more will get to experience the state championship meet.

For the defending champion Orono Red Riots, they return 5 of their top 7 from a championship team a year ago. Leading the way is senior Cassie Clemmer (6th in 2009). Other runners back from last year's squad are seniors Siobhan Harrity (24h in 2009), Elizabeth Nelson (27th) & Jessica Richards (37th in 2009) along with junior Laura Hamilton (43rd in 2009). This squad had a ton of experience which should help them in the championship meets.

The team most likely to challenge Orono, should be George Stevens Academy. Last Fall they didn't have 5 runners finish so had no team score, so the goal will be to get 5 healthy runners to the finish line. Top returner is junior Lakota Bowen (14th in 2009), with a supporting cast of juniors Nicole Bakeman (35th in 2009) & Ramsey Williamson (39th in 2009), sophomore Lucy Jakub (31st in 2009). With 4 girls back with experience, look for George Stevens to be in the mix.

Other Teams

Bangor Christian: The Patriots were 3rd in 2009, earning a trip to the state meet. They look to be in contention again in 2010 for a spot. Leading the way will be sophomore Beth DeCoste (11th in 2009)

Islesboro Central: finished 4th last fall, missing the state meet by one place. They'll be looking to make the next step in 2010. #1 returner is Michelle Reidy (5th in 2009)

Teams without 5 returning runners: Greenville, Lee Academy, Bucksport, Mattanawcook, Machais, Narragaugus

Individuals

With the top 7 individuals from 2009 back this season, there should be plenty of top quality running at the front of the pack in Eastern Maine Class C.

Defending champion Faith Mackey (Searsport), a junior is back looking to make it two in a row. Last fall Mackey triumphed over the field by 25 seconds. At the state meet she ran to a 13th place finish. Faith had a strong outdoor track season that saw her set personal best frat 800m & 3200m. She finished 7th in the 800m at the Class C State meet.

Junior Chelsie Oldfield (Foxcroft Academy pictured below) was the runner-up in 2009, she went on to finish 9th in the state

meet; the top finishers from Eastern Maine. There have been rumors that Oldfield may be transferring, but those are unconfirmed at this time. Oldfield stepped up another level this spring on the track, clocking personal best at 800m-3200m. At the Class C state meet she ran 5:32.81 for 5th in the 1600m & also finished 8th in the 3200m

Another contender will be Bucksport junior Nelly Winship (3rd in 2009). Winship ran well in the regional a year ago, she ran even better at the state meet finishing 10th, and the 2nd finisher from Eastern Maine. Winship focused on the 800m outdoors, finishing 16th in the Class C state meet. With another year of experience under her belt, she could be ready to take her running up another level this fall.
