Southwest Classic Boys Preview

Varsity Boys Teams
The boys varsity is much anticipated as the top schools from the SMAA & the WMC will square off. The meet features #1 Scarborough, #2 Falmouth, #3 Gorham, #4 Cape Elizabeth, #6 Massabesic, #8 Greely, #10 York & #12 Cheverus from last week’s MaineTrackXC fan/athlete poll. Two of the aforementioned teams, #2 Falmouth & #4 Cape will be resting their varsity squads, but that doesn’t diminish the top notch team competition that we should see on Saturday. What we should get out of this meet is who is the top team in the SMAA. It should be noted most of these teams will square off again next week at The Festival of Champions in Belfast.
#1 ranked Scarborough has yet to run a 5k, but has been impressive to start off the 2010 season, including a perfect score at their first meet. They are led by Nick Morris, who has won both races this season.
Three Miles
Coming into the meet #3 Gorham is coming off a fine performance on their home course, where they averaged 17:09 as a team 1-5 for 5k. Leading the way was senior Logan Marshall who clocked 16:29.
5k
#6 Massabesic raced Gorham last week and came out on the short side of a 30-38 score. The Mustangs ran well though averaging 17:19 for 5k for their top 5. They are led by 1-2 punch of Jacob Brooks & Pteer LePage
#8 Greely has started off the season with some close match-ups against WMC foes Cape, Falmouth & York. They came out of the losing end each time, but the Rangers are getting better and running on their home course will help. Senior Sam Johnston leads the way for the Rangers.
#10 York has reloaded after losing a lot to graduation. The Wildcats scored a win over #8 Greely on their home course 2 weeks ago. York is led by the 1-2 Mitchell Finitz & Silas Freeman
#12 Cheverus was a surprise in the poll this week, but the Stags ran well at Gorham last Friday averaging 17:39 for 5k. The young Stags are running well right now, and will look for that to continue. The Stags are led by Jack Terwilliger
