MaineTrackXC Freshman Boys 2010 Rewind
The freshman class in 2010 had a big impact especially in Class B. Ellsworth's Dan Curts led the way for all freshman in 2010. Curts won the Eastern Maine Class B Regional championship and then went on to place 3rd in the Class B state meet. Dan ran a seasonal best of 16:26, which was good for the 6th fastest time overall in the state. Freshman Ryan Washington (Caribou) was a major reason why Caribou won the Class B state meet. Washington placed 33rd, and improved steadily over the last month of the season, without his improvement and performance the Vikings might not have won the title. Another standout was Josef Holt-Andrews (Telstar) who placed 3rd in the Class C state meet, notching the 8th fastest time of the day. Holt-Andrews ran 16:47 at Twin Brook, then lowered his personal best to 16:33 at the state meet.. Another Class B standout was GNG's Will Schafer who placed 9th at the Class B state meet running a personal best 17:08. Schafer is known for his track prowess but had a solid year ending it with his best performance. Sticking with Class B, Belfast's Luis Mauser had a strong year as well finishing 18th in the state meet with a personal best 17:22. Additionally Curts & Holt-Andrews qualified for the New England meet, they were the top two freshman in the meet. There is a lot of top end talent in the freshman class, check out the top 20 runners below, looks like Maine boys HS running has a bright future ahead
MaineTrackXC caught up with Dan Curts & Josef Holt-Andrews after the NE Meet
Dan Curts Ellsworth HS Freshman of the Year
Dan Curts (Ellsworth HS) pictured above had a great freshman campaign. Curts clocked the 9th fastest 5k in the state during the 2010 season, 16:26. Along the way he added wins at the Caribou Invitational, an 8th place finish at the festival of champions in the seeded race, a PVC championship, a Eastern Maine Regional title, a 3rd place finish at the Class B state meet, & 41st place finish at the New England Championship meet. Dan clocked sub 17 in all of his 5k's this year, he was under 16:30 twice on the Belfast course. At the New England meet Dab was the top freshman in the race. If his freshman season is any indication of what the future holds we are in for a treat, and the limits are endless for Curts.
