Event Spotlight
GIRLS
Brunswick is the favorite based on the seeds, they are getting points from seemingly everywhere. The Dragons are seeded for 24 points in the distance races, plus another 16 in the sprints & another 16 in the field. Can anyone make up that deficit? Look for SMAA champion Bonny Eagle to make a run, they will rely heavily on the Dostie sisters. Scarborough can never be counted out, they have won the last 6 titles, and have shown over the years to run their best when it counts the most. The Red Storm will need a big day from their sprinters Nicole Kirk & Morgan Rodway to come home with title #7. Brunswick's KVAC rival Mt. Ararat also has a strong team. Then you have the EMITL team Bangor & Brewer who also figure to be in the mix. Should be an exciting meet, and things could come down to the 4x200 relay just like last year.
Relays
4x800 Brunswick the team favorite to win the meet hopes to get started off on the right foot with a win in the 4x800 relay, The Dragons are the state leaders running 10:13.62 earlier in the year. It'll be interesting to see if any of the SMAA schools can compete with them, Massabesic, Scarborough, & Bonny Eagle all have strong teams entered. Mt. Ararat figures to right in the mix as well. Should be a great event to get the ball rolling on the track
4x200 This event will most likely decide the team champion just like last year. Heat 1 should be one of the fastest with Edward Little, Thornton Academy, & Brunswick. Heat 4, the last one, has both Bonny Eagle & Scarborough both teams expect to be in the running for the team title. A state record may be required to win, can't think of a better way to finish off a meet.
Sprints/Hurdles
55 Meter Hurdles The top two seeds Grace Maclean (Bangor) & Allison Hill (Brunswick) have indentical seed times of 8.81, both athletes ran the times to win there conference championship meets last weekend. Watch out for 3rd seed Peyton Dostie (Bonny Eagle) who has spent most of the year running 45 yard hurdles in the expo, she was the best in the SMAA and will look to do the same Monday. Sarah Perkins (Gorham) is another threat she pushed Dostie last weekend, and is familiar with things at USM, as she practices there.
400m This should be a race everyone is anticipating. The #1 seed Teal Jackson (Brewer) has been running faster each week, she clocked 59.49 to win the EMITL title, and is the only runner with a sub 60 seed time. Last years runner-up Maria Curit will be seeking that elusive 400m indoor title, Curit has been running at her best the last month or so, she broke the SMAA 400m record in winning the title last weekend. Her 61.2 could translate to a a state record run. Don't forget about Peyton Dostie (BE) who also broke the 400m record last weekend but was 2nd to Curit, Dostie should be under 60 second easily.
55 Meter Dash This should be an intense race in the finals. Teal Jackson (Brewer) exploded last weekend crushing her personal best with a state leading 7.40. Brunswick's Alexis Dickinson has been at the top all year until last weekend, Alexis won the KVAC meet in a personal best 7.51. Madison Prescott (Mt. Ararat) is the #3 seed 7.60. Scarborough's Nicole Kirk is the #4 seed but has been running 40yd all year, she blasted a 5.38 to win the SMAA title, she's gets stronger the longer the race, so expect her time to be faster than seed. This race will be a key one as many of the top teams have girls seeded to score
200m This is going to be an awesome race. Teal Jackson (Brewer) the #1 seed 26.60 will have the advantage of chasing down the SMAA runners who are out in lanes 1& 6, inlcuding defending champion Maria Curit in lane 1, and outdoor champion Nicole Kirk in lane 6. KVAC champion Alexis Dickinson (Brunswick) had a big breakthrough in winning the KVAC title last weekend, 26.68. This race is another key one in the team championship.
Distance
Mile Freshman Edie Pallozi (Deering) is the top seed, she is coming off a personal best in winning the SMAA title, where she closed the last 400m in 77 to clock 5:17.9, she has close to an 11 second advantage over the rest of the field. Brunswick has the #2 & #3 with Teresa Murphy & Katie McMahon, while Bonny Eagle counters with Amber Dostie & Samantha Cox.
800 This race should be one of the closer ones with a stacked field. Scarborough's Emily Tolman is the #1 seed with a 2:23.7, she has been running very fast times by herself. Tolman clocked 1:30.6 for 600yd to win the SMAA title last weekend, a sub 2:20 performance doesn't seem unrealistic. Deering's Edie Pallozzi just a freshman will look to mix it up as the #2 seed. Pallozzi got great closing speed. Amber Dostie (BE) & Samantha Cox (BE) will be looking to gove the Scots a big boost in the team race, both won 800m titles at the SMAA last weekend.Michelle Haluska (Brewer) will be running fresh, she won a distance triple last weekend, running a 2:24.81 in the middle of it, what can she do fresh? Also watch for Kyia Jensen (Brunswick) who ran 2:24 at the Dartmouth Relays. Also defending champion Chloe Emerson (Mt. Ararat) is in the fast heat, remember she won the title out of the 2nd heat last year
2Mile Brunswick's Katie McMahon comes in as the #1 seed, 11:50,73. McMahon has been very consistent this season in the 2 mile running sub 12 many times. She'll be pushed by SMAA champion Charlotte Pierce (TA) who ran away with the SMAA title last week, Pierce's time 11:52.2. This is yet another key event for Bonny Eagle, freshman Mary Szatowski has had a great year, she comes in as the #3 seed (11:58.9). While the race up front should be good, the battle for the other spots will have a big impact on the team title race.
Field
Shot Put Mt. Ararat's Randi London has been the top thrower all year long, she comes in with a 39-7 1/2 distance, and last weekend won the KVAC title with a 39+ throw as well. This is a big event for Thornton Academy as they have the #2 seed Abigail Huntress & #3 seed Emily Morin. Huntress won the SMAA title last week.
Long Jump The long jump field is stacked with Class A record holder and defending champion Maria Curit back as the #1 seed 16-10 1/2. Last year state runner-up Tricia Stewart is back as well. This is big event for Scarborough who as the #2 Emilia Scheemaker (16-6 1/2) & #5 seed Emily Tolman. Also watch for Grace MacLean ( Bangor), she is #3 seed 16-4 3/4.
Triple Jump Scarborough's Emilia Scheemaker will be looking for her first individual state title, she comes in as the #1 seed 36-2 3/4. She has been jumping consistently above 35ft all year long. Brunswick who hasn't had a lot of jumping points over the years, has two potential scorers with Allison Hill, #2 seed 34-10 3/4, & freshman Anna Turner #4 seed 33-2. This event could put the Dragons over the top. Also look for freshman Tiffany Gray (Bangor) #3 seed 34-4 to be in the mix
High Jump Last year Bangor's Grace MacLean surprised everyone when she broke the state record 5-6 1/4 on her way to the state title. MacLean is back having a seasonal best of 5-2, she'll look to relive the magic of last year. Caroline Summa (Cheverus) is the top seed at 5-4, she cleared that mark last weekend, winning the SMAA title. Also 2009 state champion Colby Gail (5-2) is back after missing last year due to injury. Additionally there are two other seeded at 5-2, Peyton Dostie (BE) & Hannah Johnston (Kennebunk). This could be one of the deepest HJ's in history
Pole Vault This is one of the marquee events this year. With Lindsey Folsom (Cony) 11-2 the top seed, and Jaclyn Masters (Edward Little) 11-1 facing off against eachother again. Folsom holds the advantage as she has won each time with the exception fo the meey Masters cleared her best 11-1. Folsom is the defending champion lookin to make it two in a row. There are two other vaulters who have cleared 9-0, Andrea Tolman (Scarborough) & Anna Hayden (Bangor)

BOYS
Mt. Ararat comes into the meet as the favorite, they will be relying heavily on McKenzie Gary who is seeded for 30 points. Ultimately it will come down to how the rest of the Eagles run they have strong options in every event 400m and up, plus the pole vault. Edward Little the KVAC champion is in the mix as well, they are seeded for 30 points in the field events, Connor Harris is their big gun. Scarborough the SMAA champion, will be in the mix too, they cover mutliple events wich makes them dangerous, the key will be seniro Orin James and their distance core which is seeded for 25 points. The head to head matchups between the teams will decide the outcome.
Relays
4x800 This is a key event to start the meet as team favorites Scarborough & Mt. Ararat square off head to head. The Red Storm come in as the #1 seed, they have yet to run together as a group this season but have run some fast individual times, last year they were runner-ups to Cheverus. Lewiston took the KVAC title, and it the process clocked a seasonal best, they have top 800 meter runner Ali Hersi. Mt. Ararat has a very strong team as well capable of running under 8:20, they didn't run their best team at the KVAC where they finished 2nd. All three teams are capable of fast times.
4x200 The meet most likely will come down to the 4x200m relay, Mt Ararat is in heat 1, Scarborough is in heat 2, and Edward Little has the advantage of being in the final heat. Watch out for Brunswick is in heat 3, they have the fastest seed time. Also watch out for South Portland & Lewiston in Heat 4 and Bonny Eagle in Heat 2
Sprints/Hurdles
55m Hurdles This should be a very good event with several hurdles capable of the top spot. Brewer's Tristan Wortman is the #1 seed 8.16. Watch out for Deering's Carleton Allen, the SMAA champ and 3rd place finisher last year. Scarborough's Orin James had a tough run in the SMAA final, he has the #3 seed 8.28, a time he ran at the USM relays in December. EL's Michael Lucas the KVAC champion figures to be in the mix as well, he finished 4th last winter.
55m Dash Can anyone catch McKenzie Gary (Mt. Ararat)? Or will Gary break the Class A record? Gary comes into the meet on fire, he dropped a new state leader 6.59 to win the KVAC meet, the time is .01 faster than Colby Brooks state record set in 2006. SMAA champion & defending state champion Imadhi Zagon (Portland) is back to defend his title. Watch out for Deering's Renaldo Lowry, tied for 1st in the SMAA, and 4th last winter. South Portland's Adrian Reid is another title threat he ran 6.74 to win at USM Relays and was just .01 behind at the SMAA meet over 40yd. Another young runner to watch for is Ethan Beaulier (Noble), he ran faster than Zagon, Lowry and Reid winning the Jr. 40yd title last weekend. A good start is essential in this race with so many high quality sprinters
400m This should be a great race as the runners in fastest heat are separated by just .33 #1-#6. Josiah White (Lawrence) is the the top seed at 53.37, while KVAC champion Ryan Smith (Mt. Ararat) 53.40 will be looking to repeat his win from a week ago. Watch out for SMAA runners Emmaunel Vincent (Westbrook) the #3 seed, and Joey Collins (Bonny Eagle) the #6 seed, they could easily surprass their seed times from the Expo. Don't be surprised to see some scorers come out of heat 2 as well.
200m The field will once again be chasing McKenzie Gary of Mt. Ararat, Gary won the KVAC title last weekend running 22.91, one of the fastest 200m times ever in the state of Maine. He'll have to be on his game to chase the 22.65 state record of Colby Brooks but the way he's been running the past few weeks nothing would be a suprise. Renaldo Lowry (Deering) clocked one of the fastets 200m times in Expo history earlier this year 24.60, which converts to the #2 seed time 23.4. Don't count of Imadhi Zagon (Portland) he was teh runer-up last year, and comes in the #4 seed. Matt Htake (Brunswick) had his best run of the season at the KVAC's he's the #3 seed, and finished 3rd last year.
Distance
Mile Jack Terwilliger (Cheverus) doesn't come in with the fastest time on the season, in fact his time is only 4th best, but he's still the favorite. Why the favorite? Well he ran 4:24 at BU earlier in the year on a Sunday, and has the fastest personal best in the field by close to 20 seconds. EL's Faisal Noor comes in with the top seed time 4:36.72, he won the KVAC title last week. Scarborough's Tom Hague is another threat, he won the USM running 4:37.67, he also has a 4:29 to his credit from a Sunday meet at BU. Mt. Ararat's Andy Reifman-Packett is a contender as well, his best time on the season is 4:38.55. This race is a key one in the team battle.
800m This is the event that could decide the team title. 8 of the 12 runners in the field are from the expected contending team. Ali Hersi (Lewiston) is the top seed 2:02.38, he is coming off an easy win at the KVAC championship. He will be challenged by the Scarborough trio of Nick Morris, Tom Hague & Robby Hall. Morris has a 1:58.18 to his credit this winter, and has run undefeated in the SMAA. Patrick Horan & Mitchell Black give Brunswick two big scoring threats. While Will Hrinak & Jake Letourneau will be in the mix for Mt. Ararat.
2 Mile Cheverus's Jack Terwilliger is the #1 after his sub 10 effort in the expo, can anyone stay with Dartmouth bound senior? Look for Hussein Ibrahim (Lewiston) who broke 10 to win the kVAC meet, also don't count out Jaron Jones (Mt. Blue) who has the #2 seed time, and is running this race fresh. Mt. Ararat's Andy Reifman-Packett can't be counted he showed in the XC championship in the fall he has the ability to rise to the challenge on the biggest stage.
Field
Shot Put Bonny Eagle's Nate Martel has been the top thrower all season, his 48-3 1/4 seed is over a foot further than TA's Luke Libby the #2 seed who had a big breakthrough at the SMAA championship last week. KVAC champion Rudy Pandora (Lewiston) is throwing well at the right time as is Lawrence's Ken Zahner. Biddeford's Cody Chalout is right in the mix as well, should make for a tight competition.
Long Jump This should be one of the featured events on the day. McKenzie Gary (Mt. Ararat) is the top seed with a 21-8 mark, he's been consistently in the high 20 to mid 21's all year. Defending champion Imadhi Zagon (Portland) comes in with 20-5 1/2 seed but is capable of popping off a big jump at any time. Windham's Damien Shepard figures to be a factor as well, he popped a big personal best of 21ft a couple weeks ago.
Triple Jump Edward Little's Connor Harris has been the most consistent triple jumper all season, he comes in with the top seed 43-11. Can anyone challenge him? Look for Westbrook's Emmaunel Vincent #2 seed, and #3 seed Tyson Goodale who just keep getting better each time he competes in the event.
High Jump This could prove to be event that is a launching pad for Edward Little or Scarborough. The top seeds both have cleared 6-2, with Connor Harris (EL) & Orin James (Scarborough). Edward Little has another threat as well in Darnell Hairston who has cleared 6-0 this year. There is a handful of athletes at 5-10 as wel that will figure into the scoring.
Pole Vault This is the end of a legacy for the Slovenski family, as top seed Mike is a senior. Slovenski comes in with a 15-1 seed, which is 2ft better than #2 seed Tristan Wortman (Brewer). Mike is the defending champion, and the odds on favorite to repeat. Thee battle for 3rd could come down to Mt. Ararat's Joey Fournier and Scarborough's Alec James.
