Greely's Burgess the athlete to watch in this weekend's upcoming WMC Championship

FALMOUTH, Maine — Confidence and focus is all it takes to be champion. Just ask Greely’s 3-time Class B State and Western Maine Conference champion senior shot putter Michael Burgess, who, on Saturday, will compete in just his second Western Maine Conference Outdoor Championship. Burgess began competing in track and field when he decided to pick up a shot put during indoor season of his sophomore year, and it wasn’t long before he discovered he was rather talented in the event. Unfortuantley, Burgess’ first track season would come to abrupt end, just three weeks later, when he underwent knee surgery for an injury he had suffered during his previous football season. The surgery would also strip the Rangers’ athlete from his Sophomore baseball season.

Burgess is an all-conference lineman for Greely’s varsity football team, but both sports mean a lot to him.

“Since I’ve been playing football a lot longer than I’ve been doing track, I have a lot more passion for football, but they both mean a lot to me. At first, track didn’t mean too much, but when I finally realized the talent I possessed, my eyes opened up to a great sport which I now respect much more.”

When Burgess returned to track as a Junior, he didn’t lose a step. His 51 1/4 shot put throw would take first at the 2010 Class B Indoor State Meet, just one week after winning the 2010 Western Maine Conference Indoor Championship’s shot put with a throw of 47-11. His state championship-winning throw was just under a ten-foot improvement from his Sophomore season.

Burgess wasn’t done there. After contemplating further play for Greely’s baseball team in the spring, he finally decided to take his talents outside. The transition between indoor and outdoor track, for a thrower, can often be a difficult; as outdoor adds two new events — but nothing phased Burgess. The standout shot putter would go on to win discus at the 2010 Class B Outdoor State Meet with a hurl of 138-1. Oddly enough, Burgess would fall a half-inch short of the state-winning throw in the shot put, just one week after his victorious weekend at the 2010 Western Maine Conference Outdoor Championship. His second-place shot put throw, 49-4 1/2, turned out to be almost three feet shorter than his personal record.

It’s not a rare sight to see a Greely thrower at the top of the podium. Buffalo University’s sophomore thrower Becky O’Brien is native of Cumberland, Maine and a Greely High School alumnus. The former Ranger was a two-time Gatorade Athlete of the Year, a twelve-time All-New England selection, and one of Maine’s greatest and most honorable high school throwers.

The Rangers’ team leader continued his dominance in this year’s indoor season, becoming both the Class B state and Western Maine Conference champion in shot put for the second time in his high school career. Burgess began the season at the Dartmouth Relays where he threw a massive, 53-6 personal record. He concluded the season by breaking the personal record, again—this time at the New Balance Indoor Nationals meet, with a throw of 53-11 1/4.

This outdoor season, Burgess has tried to improve in all of his events. So far, both his discus and javelin marks have shown favorable progress. Burgess has bettered his discus and javelin throws by over ten and thirty feet, respectively, since last year’s outdoor season.

When asked which event, in his opinion, was his best, Burgess replied, “I would have to say . . . shot put and discus.” He later discussed that his confidence has grown in both the events within the past year.

When asked which event, in his opinion, would he struggle with the most, Burgess replied, “[Javelin] is going to be a challenge to win, because I have a teammate who is very close behind me which may make it difficult for me to come away with a victory.”

“I think I’ll be okay if I just focus on what needs to be done.”

Burgess plans on attending college after he graduates from Greely High School this spring. He’s still unsure of which college he’ll choose, but he knows it’s between Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine or the University of Southern Maine, located in both Gorham and Portland, Maine. Although he’s aware, that between football and track, Maine Maritime Academy only offers football, and the University of Southern Maine only offers track, it’s not the real reason why he’s stuck between deciding which school to attend next fall—he’s just unsure of what kind of engineering he wants to pursue.

When asked how he’ll prepare for the 2011 Western Maine Conference Championship, Burgess replied, “I guess I’m going to do what I normally do for any meet and hopefully get it done.”

Burgess is ranked No. 1 in shot put, discus and javelin going into Saturday’s meet.
