Two time defending champion Matt McClintock of Madison will be shooting for his 3rd straight state title in 2011. McClintock has developed into one of the 
top distance runners in the state, last fall he clocked the fastest time on the state meet course of the 3 classes, 16:00. Matt is coming off a strong spring track season, where he won Class C titles @ 1600m & 3200m distances. McClintock finished off his season with personal best at each distance at the NE Championship (4:26.11 & 9:30). Matt has shown good form this summer, clocking a personal best 15:31 on the roads.
Pushing Matt to his limit will be Boothbay's Chase Brown, Brown handed McClintock his only in-state XC defeat at the MVC championship meet. Brown ended up the runner-up in the state meet, finishing 15 seconds behind McClintock. Chase has been the bridesmaids the last two season, he'll be looking to make a big push in his final season to get to the top.
Also watch for sophomore Josef Holt-Andrews (Telstar), who had a great rookie campaign finishing 3rd in the state meet, he continued his success during the track season finsihing 3rd in the 3200 behind McClintock & Brown. Holt-Andrews with a year of experience under his belt will look to challenge the two seniors, and if his racing style from last year was any indication he'll go with them from the gun.
Others look for Merriconeag's Jack Pierce & Orono's Alex Bulteel this fall. Pierce placed 4th last fall while Bulteel placed 5th, both athletes were under 17 for 5k. Both athletes also didn't compete in outdoor track so well have to wait and see how much they improved since last fall.
Defending champion North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is the favorite to repeat as team champions in 2011. NYA returns 6 of it's top 7 runners from a year ago. They have 3 of the top 15 returners overall, led by Cam Regan & Evan Kendall. Look for WMC rival Waynflete to challenge for a top spot in 2011, the Flyers placed 3rd last fall, and return 6 of their top 7. Other teams like Telstar, Boothbay, & Monmouth could surprise as well.
