Class A Boys
Individual Defending champion Nick Morris of Scarborough is on track to win his 2nd Class A state title in a row, but he'll have plenty of compeitition. Morris is coming off win at the WM regional where he won by 18 seconds. Nick will have a slight edge over those from Eastern Maine having the experience edge as he has run the course at Twin Brook's several times, including wins in the last 2 Western Maine championships. Harlow Ladd the Eastern Maine championship the past two years is hungry to claim his first xc state championship. Ladd was leading the race last year at the mile, but slipped in some mud, and strained a muscle. Harlow won the EM title by 4 seconds over Benson Worthington (Brunswick). Worthington may be the hottest runner in the field, he has made name for himself the last two weeks with runner-up finishes in the KVAC & EM Regional. Don't count out last year's state runner-up Andy Reifman-Packett of Mt Ararat who led after the mile last year until the finishing stretch. Reifman-Packett has been 3rd the last two weeks, but has shown a knack for raising his level in the state championship meets the past 2 years. From the West also watch for Chris Dunn of Kennebunk who was the WM Regional runner-up using a strong last mile last week to pull away from a pack.

Team
Defending Class A Champion Scarborough is the favorite to repeat this weekend. The Red Storm have been the top team in Class A all fall, and backed that up with a dominating win in the Western Regional last weekend. They were the only team under 100 points as they tallied 61. South Portland was the regional runner-up, they didn't have a runner in the top 12, but had only a 36 spread for runners 1-5. Massabesic was just 9 points back of the Red Riots last week, they'll need to move up a bit to challenge as they only beat they at the #1 position. Eastern Maine champion Bangor will look to continue their turnaround with some state meet hardware. They had a 35 second spread for their top 5. They'll need to get more runners up front if they are going to challenge for the top spot. Mt. Ararat was the EM runner-up finishing 12 points behind the Rams with Messalonskee in 3rd another 6 points back. The Eagles got a huge boost when Senior Cam Dick returned to the lineup, running to a 14th place finish. Can anyone challenge the Red Storm? That remains to be seen, they look like a lock to win their 6 title in the last 8 years, with everyone else battling for the runner-up trophy

Class A Girls
Individual: Abbey Leoanrdi will be shooting to join an excluisve club when she runs for her 4th straight Class A girls state xc title on Saturday. Abbey has been a dominate runner in her 4 years, setting numerous course records, and only losing once in the state of Maine. Leonardi showed she's as fit as ever as she set a course record at Twin Brook, 18:05.59 on her way to winning the WM regional by 1:10 seconds. She enters the meet as a heavy favorite. Watch for EM regional champion Erzsebet Nagy of Lawrence who has had a great first year of xc, she won the EM regional by 1:43!!! last week. Last year's state-runner, Emily Durgin has been battling with some anemia issues, it's unknown whether or not she is going to run on Saturday, she dropped out of the WM regional meet. Fiona Hendry last year's #3 finishers & Shannon Conley last year's #4 finisher both of Cheverus will be in the mix for the runner-up position. Hendry is coming off her best race of the year at the WM regional, where she ran 19:15 to finish 2nd. There is plenty of talent in this race, should be quite a few New England qualifiers.

Defending champions Cheverus will be aiming for a 2nd straight title, if they were healthy it would be a lock. If they can get a solid race from Durgin, they Stags will win their 3rd straight Class A title. If Durgin doesn't finish like last weekend then watch for WM regional runner-up Massabesic, who was just 5 points back of the Stags last weekend. Mt Ararat the EM champ could be in the mix as well, they rebounded from their loss at the KVAC meet to win the EM regional by 16 points over Brunswick. Windham & Mt Blue look to be the next best team, they will contend for a top 5 finish.
