Maine State XC Championship Boys Meet Previews
Class A Boys
Individual
Throw a bunch of names into a hat & pick one out. That maybe the most accurate way to pick the individual winner of the Class A Boys state championships. Entering this weekend there is no clear cut favorite in a season that has seen some many individuals win key races. Early season it was Jonathan Stanhope of Bangor who took the top spot at the festival of champions. At the KVAC championship Justin Tracy edged out Lewiston's Mohamed Barre. At the Western Maine Regional last week George Morrison & Michael Aboud of Massabesic were separated by less than a second. In Eastern Maine Sam Wood of Mt Ararat pressed the pace and dared everyone else to chase him. With some many runners with a legit shot at an individual title this should be one of the best races on the day. Someone will take a risk and emerge as the best from this group.
Team
Until last week everyone assumed the Class A state meet was going to be battle between the Lewiston Blue Devils & defending state champion Scarborough Red Storm. Then Massabesic put on a dominating and impressive performance in the WM Regional as they placed 5 in the top 11 to easily win the title over Scarborough 31-64. Its now a 3 team race with Mustangs entering as a slight favorite.
Can Massabesic repeat their magical performance from a week ago? If they do they will be hard to beat as they had just a 39 second split for their top 5, and no team can match that in Class A. The Mustangs should be flying high with confidence after their dominating performance last weekend
Lewiston has been considered the best team in the state for a while after they eeked out a win at the Festival of Champions, and then cruised to easy wins at the KVAC & EM Regionals. No team has a better top 4 than then Blue Devils, as they have 4 guys capable of running #1 for them. They have the only top 3 in which every runner has been under 17 minutes, and their 4th guys isn't far off. The key for Lewiston will be how well can their #5 runner Jordan Balsamo can run, if he can pull out a personal best things look good for the Blue Devils
Don't count of the 2x defending state champion Scarborough Red Storm. While they were handled with ease at the WM regional, they have shown in the past that they can rebound from a loss at the regional meet & win states. Good news for Scarborough last week was the performance of Jack Sullivan who will be counted on for another big race this weekend. Also if Ian Morris can rebound from his DNF last week he gives them another quality runner capable of a top finish. Going into the state meet as the underdogs can often be a blessing is disguise
Let's take a look at the Individual contenders
Sam Wood Mt Ararat HS
EM Regional Champion 17:00
KVAC 5th place 17:27
Wood set the pace at last weekend's EM Regional. He controlled the pace and dared someone to run with him, but in the end his strategy was the winning one, as he trumped the field by 4 seconds, running 17:00 in tough conditions. Sam showed he could run with the lead pack the week before at the KVAC Championship where he faded over the final .3 miles, he got it right last weekend, and heads into this weekend as one of the individual favorites. Mt. Ararat has had a history of top runners, & Wood will be looking to put his name up their will all the greats in Eagle history.
Wood's Outlook "A lot of people are looking to win this race so I imagine theres going to be a fast pack out in front pushing the pace. I just plan to be at the front of that pack when it crosses the finish line."
George Morrison & Michael Aboud Massabseic HS
WM Regional finished 1-2 both running 17:29
Morrison has a best of 17:12 @ Belfast
Aboud has a best of 17:20 @ Belfast
Last weekend senior George Morrison & sophomore Michael Aboud joked with eachother before the WM Regional that if they were close to the lead at 2 miles that something would be wrong. Good thing they didn't panic when they found themselves leading the WM Regional with a mile to go, instead they looked at eachother and knew they could do something special. Over the final mile the Massabesic duo worked together to pull away for a 3 second margin of victory. Morrison took the win with Aboud in his slipstream. The tough part for the duo will be trying to repeat their surprise performance again this week, but certainly don't count against them.
Justin Tracy Mt Blue
EM Regional 8th 17:18
KVAC Class A Champion
Tracy was the KVAC Class A champion two weeks ago at Cony which showed he can run with anyone in Class A. At last week's EM Regional Justin felt the pressure of entering as one of the favorites as his first mile came back to haunt in the latter stages of the race. Expect Tracy to learn from his experience a week ago, and run smarter this week. Mt. Blue has a history of individuals excelling at the Class A state meet so despite last week's 8th place finish, expect Tracy to mix it up at the front of the pack and don't be surprised if he emerges as the champion. He enters the meet with a 16:46 personal best on the Belfast course
Cameron Nadeau Biddeford
WM Regional 3rd place 17:32
2011 State Meet 5th place
Nadeau wasn't pleased with his race at last week's WM Regional, and feels he's got a much better race in him this week. Cam thought he let the pace go out to slow, and will be aiming to avoid the same trap this week. Nadeau who ran undefeated in the SMAA all year until last weekend, has experience at running well in the state meet, last year he placed 5th overall. At FOC he was the 2nd Class A runner with his 16:30 clocking. Look for Cam to rebound this weekend & put himself in position to make a run at the title
Mohamed Barre & Mohamed Awil Lewiston
Awil was the EM Runner-up 17:04
Barre was 6th @ EM Regional 17:12
Barre & Awil have been the top runners for the powerful Lewiston Blue Devils team this fall. Barre is the experience veteran who has done well in big races in the past 2 years. Last year he placed 7th overall, and has a runner-up finish at the KVAC Class A meet two weeks ago as well as a 6th place finish in the EM regional last week. Barre ran 16:37 on the Belfast course to place 8th at thr FOC this season. His teammate Mohamed Awil has had a great season, and he continues to excel in the postseason. Awil placed 6th overall in the KVAC meet and followed that up with his finest effort of the season at the EM regional meet, a 2nd place finish & personal best 17:04 effort. Watch out for this duo as they will not only be making a run at individual glory but a team title.
Awil's Outlook: "Our boys have encountered many challenges this season , and Saturday we face one together. everyone knows what it takes to win State Championship. We are just gonna try our best and see the outcome. good luck to everyone who is running at states!"
Robby Hall Scarborough
WM Regional 4th place 17:42
Belfast personal best 16:38
Hall is coming off a controlled race that saw him finish 4th overall in the WM Regional last week. Look for Robby to place himself in the lead pack this weekend, he has run well at Belfast in the past including a 9th place finish at the FOC with a personal best of 16:38 earlier this year. Hall will be looking to make it 3 years in a row the Red Storm jersey crosses the finish line first, as former teammate Nick Morris won in 2010-11. Not only will he be looking for individual success, it's important he gets the lowest stick he can to help his team who is in the mix for the team title.
Jonathan Stanhope Bangor
EM Regionals 7th 17:13
Top Class A runner @ FOC 16:24
Stanhope of Bangor is coming off a much better race at the EM Regionals where he placed 7th, at the KVAC meet he was well off the pace finishing 9th in the Class A race. He proved earlier this year at FOC that he can run with anyone in Class A, as he was the top A finisher running a personal best 16:24. Look for Stanhope to run a controlled race during the first half & then crush the last half. That's the strategy he employed at the FOC, and last year's state meet. A year ago he placed 12th this after running at the back of the pack for the first mile of the race.
Stanhope's outlook: "I'm excited for the race this weekend. I've done everything I can to prepare for States, and I just hope I can stay near the front of the race. There's 11-12 people who can win on Saturday."

Class B Boys
Individual
Dan Curts vs Silas Eastman round 2
This should be a heavyweight battle for the ages as the states two best distance runners sqaure of for the Class B individual title. Earlier this year Curts finally took a win over Eastman at the Manchester Invitational, the winning margin less than a second. In fact if you count the 2 mile from outdoors last year state meet, the two have been separated by less than a second, which makes the anticipation for this race high.
Curts has been battling illness and is finally coming around again. He had the luxury of cruising to an easy win at the EM Regional. Eastman had the same luxury as he raced out to an ealry lead an cruised in to take the WM regional title last weekend.
While the others in the race will most likely be left running for a top 5 position there are a handful of runners who have a shot at that distinction.
Nate Madeira Greely
Runner-up WM Regional 17:10
Madeira has been getting stronger each week it seems. The senior was the WM Regional runner-up a week ago closing with a hard last mile to run 17:10 in tough conditions. Last year Nate placed 5th overall so he's no stranger to running well in a big meet. With a personal best of 16:56 this year on a tough course at St Joe's, look for him to close out his state meet career with a new personal best
Ben Trapani Camden Hills
Runner-up EM Regional 17:39
KVAC Champion
Trapani has had a very succesful year including a win at the KVAC Championship, and following that up with a runner-up finish in the EM Regional a week ago. Ben was the top Class B runner at the FOC meet where he ran a personal best 16:36 to place 7th overall. Look for Ben to challenge for a top 3 finish this weekend, if the weather cooperates he'll have to run a personal best to do it most liekly.
Peter Doane & Liam Simpson Cape Elizabeth
Doane 3rd WM Regional 17:28
Simpson 4th WM Regional 17:31
The dynamic duo came up big for the Capers at the WM Regional as Doane edged out Simpson 17:28 to 17:31, they finished 3rd & 4th respectively. Both are capable of beating eachother on any given day, and this weekend they will be pushing themselves for a top 3 finish, but more importantly finishing with two low sticks for their team. They have been running with Madeira for 2 miles the last two weeks, but have been unable to to stay with him, maybe try #3 will be the one.
Robert Looker Ellsworth
3rd EM Regionals
Looker is coming off a strong 3rd place finish at the EM Regional as he finished with a time of 17:53. On the year he has run a personal best of 16:50 for 5k at the Manchester Invitational, where he finished 13th in the small school race. Robert was just 36th at the FOC having a little bit of an off race, but he's rebounded nicely down the stretch with 3rd place finishes his last 3x times out. Looker will also be looking to get a low stick for his team who are right in the mix for the team title
Braden Becker Yarmouth
5th WM Regionals
Becker has been able to run with the top runners in the WMC all season long. On more than one occasion he's been right with Cape's duo of Doane & Simpson. He's proven he's not afraid to push himself with the top guys and expect that stay effort on Saturday at the state meet. Last week Becker placed 5th running 17:46 on the tough layout at Twin Brook. Earlier this season he had his personal best on the belfast course running 16:55 to place 20th at FOC.
Team
It looks to be a 3 horse race for the team title.
EM Regional champion Ellsworth heads in a slight favorite based on their impressive performance last weekend that saw them place 5 in the top 10 of the EM Regional. The Eagles captured the title with 27 points. With potential individual favorite Dan Curts leading the way Ellsworth is assured on a low stick. It will be up to Robert Looker & Brayden Beardsley to back him up along with Frank King & Cooper Holmes. The Eagles last won the state title in 1998.
Cape Elizabeth the WM Regional champion was back at full strength last week and they cruised to the title with a 46 point win. The Capers will be seeking their first state title since 2006. They are led by potential top 5 runners Peter Doane & Liam Simspon. Backing them up in #3 & #4 holes are Will Britton & Kyle Kennedy who placed 14th & 18th in the WM Regional. A strong race out of the #5 runner Justin Guerette will help the cause.
The defending state champion Falmouth Yacthsmen will be back at full strength his weekend after holding out a couple of top 7 runners at the regional meet. Look for Falmouth to rebound this weekend & be right in the mix for a repeat title. Falmouth needs a big race from Jay Lesser & Bryce Murdick up front, then have Spencer Brown, Scott Lambert & Josh SImensky run in a tight pack. One thing going for Falmouth is their depth their top 7 is interchangeable outside of the top 2, so they have some margin of error if someone happens to have an off day.
York the WM Regional runner-up will look to keep the momentmum going as well. They shocked everyone with their 2nd place finish last weekend. The key for the Wildcats were big races from seniors Nick Eaton (6th) & Alec Jordan (9th

Class C Boys
Individual
Like the Class B individual race the Class C individual race promises to be a barn burner between Josef Holt-Andrews & Jack Pierce. The two have race head to head 2x this fall, Holt-Andrews took the win at FOC while Pierce was a man on a mission las week taking the WM Regional race. This will be the rubber match.
Last weekend Pierce set the pace at the WM Regional and never relinquished it despite a serious challenge from Holt-Andrews. It was the 2nd straight year that Pierce has edged Holt-Andrews at the regional meet. Last year Josef got back at Pierce edging him by one spot at the Class C state meet, can he do it again?
One can expect the pace to be swift at the front with Pierce leading the way. Holt-Andrews would lead the FOC at the mile in 4:45 while be cautious of his early pace, and he will want to finish stronger than he did a month ago. Either way this race should be back and forth, and a kick finish would be the best way to settle it.
Tyler White Orono
EM Regional Champion 17:28
Orono's Tyler White is one to watchout for this weekend. The senior has had a great season and he's been running even stronger in the postseason. White was the PVC overall runner-up & took the EM Regional last week with ease clocking, 17:28. Tyler has run conservatively at the beginning of races then really picked it over the last half. He may try a new strategy this week to see if he can hang with Pierce & Holt-Andrews. He ran a personal best of 16:41 on the Belfast course at FOC to place 11th.
Others looking to contend for a top 5 spot
Marc Hachey Winhrop
3rd WM Regional
Hachey is coming off a 3rd place at the WM Regional as he covered the 5k course at Twin Brook in 17:53. At the MVC meet he was the runner-up to Holt-Andrews running a strong 17:29 for 5k @ UMA. Earlier in the year Hachey ran 17:30 @ Belfast during the FOC where he placed 49th.
Josh Espy Waynflete
4th WM Regional
Espy used a strong last mile in the WM Regional to close out a 4th place finish. He clocked 18:19. At FOC Josh ran well with a 17:35 good for 59th overall. Last year Espy placed 8th in the WM Regional & 12th in the state meet, he's in a good position to improve on the state meet performance from a year ago.
Sam Stahnke George Stevens Academy
EM Regional Runner-up
Stahnke pushed the pace in the EM Regional last week, he was rewarded for his effiorts with a runner-up finish (17:58). At FOC Sam set his personal best of 17:49 to place 80th. Considering the conditions last week it looks like he is poised to run a personal best, and if he does that he'll be in the mix for a top 5 finish. Talk about improvement a year ago Stahnke placed 44th in the Class C state meet.

Team
A showdown is brewing...
The Class C team title is up for grabs, WM Regional champion Hall-Dale is looking for its first state title since 1998, while EM Champion Orono will be seeking its first title since 1975.
Hall-Dale has been arguably the best team in Class C all year, they are led by Josh Ringer who is a potential top 10 finisher. They defeated Orono at FOC. The Bulldogs will need a big day out Matt Plourde & Chris Pomerleau who are the #2 & #3 runners.
Orono is the team that has been closing the season out on a hot streak. They are led by Tyler White who is top 3 individual contender. They had 6 of the first 13 finishers in the EM Regional. The Riots will rely on a tight pack for runners 2-6th, a week ago it was just 34 seconds. Look for Brian Westhoven to be a key for Orono along with Schuyler Collett & Josh Marquis
The deciding factor in the team race could be the #5 runners of each team. Harry Cheung (Hall-Dale) & James O'Neil (Orono)
Bangor Christian the EM runner-up should compete with Waynflete the WM runner-up, Boothbay, & Winthrop for top 5 team finishes.
