Looking ahead to XC 2013
It's never too early to start looking ahead to the 2013 XC season. This is the article I posted at the end of the 2012 XC season. We will begin our 2013 XC coverage starting in August, so here's something to tide you over until we begin.
Class A Boys

Top 25 Individuals
Mt. Blue's Josh Horne won't be the most improved runner in the state next fall, instead he'll be looking to win an individual state title as he leads all state meet returners. Lewiston's Isaiah Harris who ran xc for the first time this fall will return will a year of experience under his belt. Caleb Lord of Hampden Academy is the only other returner who broke 17 minutes this fall. Gorham's Jesse Southard is the top freshman returner, with Harris the top sophomore, and Horne the top junior.

The Bangor Rams are the top returners in 2012 led by Jonathan Stanhope. Massabesic is the #2 team, the Mustangs who won in 2012 will be looking to repeat in 2013. Scarborough always one of the best teams returns another strong squad as well. Add in Falmouth to this strong group & the competition gets even better.

5 of the top 10 are back in 2013 with Bonny Eagle's Mary Szatkowski leading the way. Cheverus's Shannon Conley has finished in the top 6 in her 3 state meet races will 2013 be the year she gets an individual title? Freshman Tessa Cassidy finished 9th this year, will she make the jump up the ladder in 2013? Gabby Johnson of Massabesic struggled in the middle of the season but was back at full strength for the championship meets, she's the top sophomore returner.

The Dragons of Brunswick lead the returning teams in 2013, just two points ahead of Cheverus. Cheverus has been a top 3 team the last 4 years, including 3 state titles in that time. Marshwood who finished 8th this year has a shot to be one of the top teams in 2013, as they are the 3rd best team on paper.

Defending Champion Dan Curts will be back looking to make it 2 in a row in 2013. 7 of the top 10 are back in 2013, should make for a very competitive race up front as all are juniors with a lot of state meet experience. This list includes Falmouth but rumor has it they will be moving to Class A East next fall. Bryce Murdick of Falmouth is the top sophomore returner, while Justin Guerrette of Cape leads the freshman returners.

Cape Elizabeth, the state champions this fall, return their entire top 7 as they look for a repeat in 2012. Ellsworth who finished 4th this year is the #2 returner. Falmouth is the 3rd best team returning but as mentioned before they are expected to move to Class A.

Monmouth Academy leads the 2013 returner, they placed 7th this fall. They are a single point better than Orono the 2012 state runner-ups. NYA had a rebuilding year in 2012 while placing 8th, they return a the 3rd best squad in 2013 as they look to get back to the top spot.

Carsyn Koch will have an opportunity next fall to make history as she aims for her 4th straight xc title, the only other female to do it was Abbey Leonardi. 8 of the top 10 are back in 2013 which should make for great race. Lily Koffman of Orono is the top sophomore returner, she finished as the state runner-up this fall. Natalie Coleman of Bucksport is the top freshman returner at #9.

Washburn the defending champions are the top returning team in 2013 as they return their entire squad. Orono who finished as the runners-up this fall also have their top 7 back. With these two squads back at full strength it should make for a very close competition. Wyanflete the 3rd place team in 2012 also returns a strong team.
