Thornton Academy Girls & Scarborough Boys capture SMAA titles

The Thornton Academy girls lived up to expectations as they cruised to the girls SMAA Southwestern's title, the Golden Trojans scored 159.5 points, while Bonny Eagle 107.5 was the runner-up. On the boys side Scarborough won its fourth title in a row as the Red Storm tallied 200 points, Cheverus was the runner-up with 165. On the Boys side there was 8 new league records set, while 4 more new league records on the girls side were set today.

Girls Recap

The Thornton Academy girls tuned up for the Class A state meet with a dominating performance at the SMAA Southwesterns Championships on Saturday. With the action getting underway with the girls long jump at 7:30am due to time constraints of the facility, Thornton showed they were all busy as Amanda Arnold popped a big one of her first attempt (16-7 1/4), which ended up being the winning jump in the Sr long jump. Thornton also would get a runner-up finish from Anna Mehlinger in the jr long jump (15-11) as they opened with 18 points in the first event

In the girls hurdles TA continued to roll as they placed 3 in the jr & sr girls final soring 36 key points in the meet. Tori Daigle would win the jr race breaking her league record of 8.83, as she clocked 8.81. Brayden Costa would finish 3rd with Olivia Libby (6th). In the seniors, The Trojans would finish 1-2 with Carly McKenna winning in 9.09 & Amanda Arnold 9.11 next, Alyssa Demario would also nab a point in 6th.

Bonny Eagle opened the running action with a state leading 10:04.85 in the 4x800m relay, Scarborough improved their seed time 47 seconds to finish second, and improve to #2 in the state with a 10:10.74. Massabesic was third in 10:14.69 (state #3)

In 55m dash action South Portland’s Lauren Magnuson ran a personal best 7.60 to take the junior race, just missing the league record of 7.59. TA’s Daigle doubled back from the hurdles for 2nd with teammate Mehlinger in 3rd. In the senior race Cheverus’s Meredith Willard ran her fastest time of the season with a 7.49 to win the race comfortably.

Bonny Eagle’s Kialeigh Marston won a very close 600yd race over South Portland’s Nyajock Pan 1:31.44 to 1:31.86


The girl’s mile was a great race as well with Thornton Academy’s Charlotte Pierce setting the fast early pace while Bonny Eagle’s Samantha Cox running 5-10 meters behind. With 400m to go Cox started to quicken her turnover and close the gap, at the bell Pierce held a slight lead. Before the back straight Cox made her move to the front but Pierce didn’t panic and maintained her form, with a 100m to go she was able to regroup with a strong kick. Charlotte would cross the line in 5:07.49, a new league record by close to 6 seconds. Cox ran a lifetime best for 2nd 5:08.64, her time was under the old record as well.

In the junior girls 400m Lauren Magnuson won her second event of the meet as she powered home with a personal best 1:02.52, Scarborough’s Katherine Kirk was second in 63.24 In the senior race Audrey Weyand of Bonny Eagle dominated the race by almost 4 seconds as she ran a seasonal best 60.42, the time is the second fastest in the state this winter

Next up in the 800 races, the Scots Kialeigh Marston added her second victory of the day as she ran a personal best 2:28.40, Georgia Caso ran 10 seconds faster than her seed time for second (2:30.78). In the senior race, Deering’s Edie Pallozzi took the pace out very hard as she went through the 400m mark in 64 seconds. despite the early aggressive pace Pallozzi would hold on to run a league record as she clocked 2:19.50, the time is the fastest in Class A this season, and third fastest in the state. Nyajock Pan ran 2:23.03 for second, while Charlotte Pierce was a close 3rd in 2:23.39.

Tori Daigle added her second win of the day in the junior 200m as she blew away the field clocking 27.69, Kristin Benson of Gorham was second. In the senior race Scarborough’s Avery Pietras held off a strong challenge from Audrey Weyand as she clocked a personal best 27.12 for the win, Weyand ran a sesonal best 27.23. Cheverus’s Meredith Willard was a close third 27.27. The times were Class A number 3,4,5 for the trio.

In the two mile TA’s Pierce was back at it again as she had a busy day. Despite this being her 3rd race of the day, Charlotte showed she’s more fit than she ever has been as she ran 11:29.07, just off her seasonal best. Kiera Murray of Cheverus took second with a fine 11:31.14, Mary Szatowski of BE was 3rd.

In high jump action Scarborough’s Sarah Rinaldi was the only one to clear 5-0 in the junior competition. While in the senior divison Carly McKenna was also the only one over 5ft as she cleared 5-2.

Other at the jumping pit, TA continued to rack up points as Amanda Arnold won her second event of the day leaping a seasonal best 33-2 1/4 in the triple jump to take the senior event. In the junior division it was Brayden Costa of TA winning with a strong 33-1 distance as she edged Madison Bolduc of Portland, had a 2 1/2 foot personal best for second place.

In the shot put circle Alana Dube of Windham was the winner of the junior division title as she threw 30-7 1/2 which outdistance the rest of the field by almost 2 ft. In the senior division a Windham thrower again was atop the podium as Lonnie Staten the #3 seed coming into the meet was the only one over 34ft, as she threw 34-1 to win.

On the pole vault runway Sophia Swiatek of Gorham took the title with an 8-6 clearance, Scarborough’s Cailley Ledue & BE’s Sierra Cooper also cleared 8-6 but had more misses than Swiatek.

In relay action Scarborough swept the 4x200’s as the junior team won by almost 2 seconds with a 1:55.28 clocking, while the senior team cruised to victory in 1:51.86. In the Sprint Medley the last girls event of the day BE’s Kialeigh Marston anchored the Scots to a come from behind win over Thornton Academy. The winning time was 4:29.09 to 4:30.86. The win was significant as it moved Bonny Eagle into 2nd place overall.


 

 


Boys Recap

Cheverus & Scarborough were the team favorites coming into the boys SMAA southwestern championship, and both teams showed they will be in contention for the Class A title in 16 days as both teams had plenty of success.

In the end Scarborough’s depth proved to be the difference as the Red Storm pulled away after the pole vault & 2 mile on their way to scoring 200 points. The win was the 4th straight SMAA title for Scarborough. Cheverus battled throughout the meet including winning the last two relays (Sr 4x200m & Sprint Medley) as they easily outdistanced the rest of the field with 165 for second

The meet got underway with the 4x800m relay, where Scarborough got off to a good start running 8:20.97 to shatter the league record of 8:30.24, the mark improved the Red Storm’s state #1 ranking by close to 14 seconds. Cheverus was 2nd in a Class A #2 time of 8:36.83

The junior shot put was the first field event complete, and Scarborough’s Hugh McSorley through a seasonal best of 44-8 to take the title. In the senior division the state’s best thrower Jared Bell took first with a heave of 55-2.

At the high jump, the seniors went first with Ricardo Delgado of Deering winning on misses at 6-0 over Mike Orne of Cheverus. In the Junior competition Cheverus took the top spot as Jacob Schott jumped 5-10.

Back on the track in the hurdles, Biddeford’s Justin Gagnon just missed the league record in the junior race as he ran 8.07, which was .01 off the old record. Schott of Cheverus was second in 8.43. The senior race was won by Ricardo Delgado of Deering in a personal best 8.15, Travis Grant of Gorham was second in 8.19, while the Scarborough duo of Merrick Madden 8.24 & Cam Langlois 8.26 finished 3rd & 4th.

Thornton Academy’s Derek Boissonnault wasted no time to make an impact in the 55m as he set a league record in the trials with a 6.89, he followed that up with another one in the final as he ran 6.86. The record belonged to Boissonnault’s teammate Andrew Smith who finished 2nd in the final. In the senior race Ethan Beaulier of Noble broke the league record in the final with his 6.68, the race for second was a photo finish between Jackson McMann of Cheverus & Scarborough’s Ryan Jamison, both were times in 6.80

In the 600yd Jimmy Campbell of Cheverus took the win in a fast 1:16.74, Scarborough helped their cause when Alec James (1:18.20), Ben Farino (1:19.81), & Jake Alofs (1:20.48) went 2-3-4 to score 18 important team points for the Red Storm

The mile was another big scoring opportunity for Scarborough as they took the first three spots led by Robert Hall who won in 4:40.10, freshman Colin Tardiff was 2nd (4:45.66) & Will Fowler 3rd (4:47).

The junior 400m saw Cam Johnson of Noble come from behind to win in 53.64, over Jerry Kenney of Scarborough. The senior race was another league record as James Ociti of Biddeford lowered his time to 51.05. The surprise of the race was Greg Viola of Scarborough who was the 6th seed coming into the race, as he finished second in 52.27, Austin Bell of Gorham was 3rd running 52.64 out of section 2.


Yahya Hussein of Deering took the junior 800m with a personal best 2:11.65, as he kicked past Jacob Bloom of Scarborough 2:12.53 over the final 100m. In the senior race the pace was out slow 66, and then it accelerated in a hurry as Brady Foshay of Cheverus hit the afterburners to win in 2:04.42 with teammates Colin Grove taking 2nd (2:05.34) while Jon Gray of Gorham was 3rd in 2:05.82

The 200m races saw league record in both divisions. Jake Dixon of Cheverus lowered his own junior record to 23.72 as he dominated the field, Cam Johnson of Noble took second in 24.33 In the senior race Noble’s Ethan Beaulier added his second win and league record as he scorched a 23.13 to hold off a strong challenge from Jackson McMann of Cheverus 23.17, Scarborough’s Ryan Jamison was 3rd in a strong 23.47. Beaulier’s time is Class A #2, McMann’s #3, and Jamison #4.

Scarborough’s Robert Hall added his third win of the day in the 2 mile as he negative split 5:11-4:59 to win in 10:11.08, TA’s Ryan Cadorette ran a very strong race to finish second, Cadorette ran a 10 second personal best 10:16.81


On the long jumpway Jake Dixon (Cheverus) took the win with a huge personal best jump of 19-7 1/4, the mark was over a foot further than his previous best jump. Andrew Smith of TA was second with a 19-3 3/4 distance. In the senior competition South Portland had an impressive 1-2-3 finish led by Duncan Preston’s 20-00 1/2 leap, Benjamin Michaud was second 19-10 3/4, while Dillion Burns 19-2 1/2 was third.

In the last jumping event of the day the triple jump, Jacob Schott went from the 4th seed to first with a 39-10 1/4 mark, Biddeford’s Justin Gagnon 39-2 took second. In the senior division South Portland once again was impressive with places 1, 3, 4. Duncan Preston added his second win of the day with a 39-8 leap, Gorham’s Travis Grant was second 39-4 1/2.

The 4x200 relays saw more league records. Thornton Academy got things started off first with a 1:39.84 clocking as they edged Noble 1:40.11 to set a new league record. Scarborough 1:40.88 & Cheverus 1:40.94 were 3rd & 4th. In the senior race Cheverus smashed the league record as they ran 1:33.69, Scarborough was also under the old record as they ran 1:34.11. Noble was third in 1:36.69.

Cheverus closed the meet out with a win in the Sprint Medley as they clocked a league best 3:47.07, Gorham was second 3:51.33, while Scarborough rounded out the top 3 with a 3:55.46
