Deering senior Alec Troxell had the fastest time of the day with his winning Class A 16:51.53 effort, while Sofie Matson of Falmouth was the fastest female as she won Class A in 19:22.73
65 Maine schools and 9 out-of-state schools will make the trip to Belfast on Saturday to run in the 17th annual Festival of Champions at Troy Howard Middle School.
Freshman Delaney Hesler of Bonney Eagle was the fastest Maine girls while senior Jeff Waters of Massabesic took top honors on the boys side.
All class state meets for a given year were combined, and then the teams were assigned a number based on how the finished in the combined state meet. 25 points for being the top team down to 1 point for 25th best team in any given year. The Scarborough Boys won 3 out of the 4 races, while the Bonny Eagle girls went 1-2 in freshman race then 1-2-3 in senior girls race to show great team depth at SMAA Relays.

Falmouth opened May with a pair of wins as the boys team edged Biddeford, while the girls sneaked by South Portland in a five team SMAA meet.
Maine Track & Cross Country Coaches Association 2017 All-State Cross Country Team
With depth to their seventh runner Camden Hills was unstoppable in winning the Girls Class A State Championship. Falmouth's Sofie Matson, unchallenged after the first quarter mile, took the Individual title.
The postseason is officially here! The Northern and Southern Regional championships went off on Saturday. The North headed to Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, while the South went to the Twinbrook Recreational area in Cumberland. Both regions produced close finishes and great individual performances. Let's take a look at the highlights.

Conference championships around the state highlighted the weekend in Maine XC. We had several of the top teams in the state battle it out at the KVAC Championships, while some of the top runners rested for the WMC Championships. A course record went down in the PVC and there were dominant team finishes in the MVC. Let's take a look at the highlights.

Mt Blue's Aaron Willingham had to battle all the way to line to come from behind to best Bryce Murdick of Falmouth. While Westbrook's Halee Phelps shocked the field in the girls race to win by 2 seconds over Maddy Doyle of Marshwood. Scarborough sweep the team titles with the boys winning by 13 over Falmouth, and the girls by 4 over Massabesic.
Deering's Iid Sheikh-Yusef suprised the field to win the boys Class A Western Maine title, while the Falmouth boys edged Scarborough by 3 points for the team title. On the girls side freshman Anna Slager surged late to win, while Massabesic was the top team.

The Massabesic girls also dominated competition, claiming 5 of the top 7 spots and scoring 25 points against a Westbrook team that was riddled with sickness. Michael Aboud continued his impressive senior season with a dominating win on an incredibly challenging Windham course Friday afternoon. Aboud led his fellow senior teammates, Andrew Mongiat and Remington Gaetjens to a 1-2-3 finish on route to a 25-47-52 win over Windham and Westbrook.

Massabesic has established itself as one of the finest xc porgrams in the state over the last 7 years. During that time the Mustangs have finished as the Class A runner-up three times, finished in third place 3 other times, and then of course you have the 4th place finish from the 2007 state meet, where they seemingly had the school's first state title but because twp of their runners crossed the line holding hands they were DQ'd.
The SMAA Relays marks the official start of a new year in Class A West! After a few preseason invitational’s, the league met up for its annual 1.54 mile showdown today at Thornton Academy. Scarborough’s Jacob Terry and Gorham’s Anna Slager were the top finishers on the day with Terry covering the course in 7:41 and Slager running an impressive 9:10.

Things got under way today for several of the top teams in Western Class A and B at Community Park in Falmouth. Massabesic's Michael Aboud took the boys 2 mile race in 11:05, while Marshwood's Maddy Doyle edged Falmouth's Vishva Nalamalapu 13:31 to 13:32. Falmouth easily was the best team on both the boys & girls side.

Bonny Eagle sophomore Kialeigh Marston won the girls individual title in her first xc season as she crossed the line in 19:34.16. On the boys side Mt Blue senior Josh Horne ran unchallenged throughout to secure the victory. With Marston's win the Bonny Eagle girls repeated as team champions 82-100 over Massabesic. On the boys side Lewiston dominated the team race as the Blue Devils won the 2nd title in school history with a 51-94 vcitory over Scarborough
The Bonny Eagle girls repeated as regional champions, while the Scarborough boys returned to the top spot. Sophomore Kialeigh Marston of BE returned from an ankle injury to lead the Scots to a 1-2 finish, while first year xc runner Ryan Cadorette of TA takes the boy individual title.
Angel Waters & Michael Aboud of Massabesic took the final SMAA meet of the season on the tough Vaughn Course @ Marshwood.

The 39th edition of the Manchester Invitational will be Saturday. This is the first big invitational weekend that will see several Maine teams competingat Derryfield Park in Manchester. On the boys side #1 Cape is in the Elite race, while #3 ranked Ellsworth will take a run at the win in the small schools race. Kirstin Dandreuter will look for the individual win in the small schools race, while Josef Holt-Andrews takes aim at the top spot in the Elite. Check out who will be competing.

The SMAA xc season got underway with the annual relay meet at Thornton Academy on Thursday. The varsity boys had 7 individual races, while the girls varsity race consisted of 5 races. Ryan Cadorette of TA was the fastest boy winning section 1 in 8:29, it was his first ever xc meet. On the girls side Kialeigh Marston topped the rest of the field in race covering the 1.65 mile courrse in 9:41. Check out more.

The 78th New England Championship will take place this weekend at the Twin Brook Recreation Park in Cumberland, ME. The boys meet features some top individuals, in what promises to be a fast and intense race. Check out the boys meeet preview for individuals and teams.
Biddeford's Cameron Nadeau took the lead at 2 miles, then held on to win the boys Class A individual title. Massabesic claimed the the boys title to win their first Class A title. Lawrence's Erzsebet Nagy took the win by 11 seconds to win her first XC title. Bonny Eagle was the best winning with 67 points to win the school's first state title
Massabesic Boys put on a dominating performance for the ages to capture the Western Class A title. George Morrison of Massabesic was the surprise winner on the boys side in 17:29. Nyajock Pan of South Portland took the girls race in 19:52. The Bonny Eagle girls took home first while Massabesic ran well for 2nd. Relive the races and find out who qualified for the state meet

It was a big day for Maine runners at the Manchester Invitational. In the girls small school race, Aleta Looker finished 1st, with Greely's Kirsten Sandreuter in 2nd, and her teammate Eva Bates in 3rd. In the boys small school race, Dan Curts edged Silas Eastman as both were timed in 15:42, the times were the fastest of the meet 3 races. Check out more coverage.

Could this be the year that the Massabesic Mustang girls finally take home the Class A team title? Massabesic has been the model of consistency the last 5 years, over that span they have been the Western Maine runner-up 5 straight times, as well as the top 4 in the state meet.

Abbey Leonardi showed that two weeks off from racing had no effect as she ripped the difficult course at the Brothers Orchard this afternoon in a fine 18:25 course record performance. Leonardi defeated her toughest rival Emily Durgin (cheverus) by 57 seconds, 19:22. The #1 ranked Cheverus Stags dominated the team competition to take down #3 rank Massabesic Mustangs 27-48, Cheverus took places 2-5th in the race. On the boys side Chris Dunn (Kennebunk) ran a strong race 17:27 to win by 41 seconds over Massabesic's Cody Vachon. Teamwise it came down to the all important 6th runner as Massabesic held off Cheverus 33-33 with a better 6th runner.

Cheverus's Jack Terwilliger conitnued his outstanding spring by adding his 3rd state leading performance this time at 3200m. Jack clocked 9:39.2 to improve the state leading time 15+ seconds. Terwilliger lead a strong field that had all 5 scorers under the state provisonal qualifying mark. The Gorham Rams were strong as a team taking down Cheverus, Kennebunk & Massbesic. In a battle between the top two teams in the SMAA, the Scarborough Red Storm took round 1 against the Cheverus Stags at a SMAA regular season meet held at Cheverus High School. The Stags were running without #1 runner Taylor Dundas, out with a IT band injury. Nate Hathaway & Craig Robinson from Scarborough ran 16:11 & 16:17 respectively on the 3 mile course, both under the old course record. On the girls side, #2 ranked Scarborough prevailed over Cheverus & Massabesic. Fiona Hendry of Cheverus took the top spot, running an impressive race, covering the course in a record 18:43.
The Patriot League named Katherine Pierce its Rookie of the Week on Tuesday after Pierce helped lead the women’s cross country team to a rout over its archrival Lafayette on Saturday.. Freshman Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) broke the SMAA Relay record with a 8:45 over th 1.6 mile course, she took 2 seconds from the previous record held by Erica Jesseman (Scarborough) who is now a top runner at UNH. Nate Hathaway (Scarborough) took control of the boys race at 800m and never relented as he took the race with a 7:56 clocking. Scarborough Boys showed great depth as they took the team title, while the Scarborough girls pulled it out in the 5th race as Erin McElwain proved the difference.
The battle for the team title this fall is sure to be a fight with several of the top teams from last fall returning key members of their squads. Scarborough the defending champion returns their entire top 7 as does Thornton Academy. Bonny Eagle, Cheverus & McAuley all have strong teams returning as well. There are sure to be some great races this fall, with any number of teams capable of winning the championship. What team will establish itself as the favorite during the regular season? What impact will the newcomers have on the individual title? Stay tuned
With the 2008 XC season nearly upon us, it is time to look at the contenders for both team and individual glory this fall in the Western Maine Class A. The season is sure to provide XC fans in Southern Maine with the opportunity to watch several top notch athletes chase their dream of a state title come late November.
