Henry Spritz Sprints to Victory in Final Stretch, Maine Coast Waldorf Claims Regional Team Title
Troy Hendricks of Sacopee Valley came into the race as one of the individual favorites, and the took off from the gun establishing himself at the front of race.
Waynflete's Henry Spritz who finished 13 seconds behind Hendricks a week ago at the WMC Championship was unfazed.
"I raced him two times before today, and he beat me by quite a bit, but I knew he was the one I was targeting."
A pack of four runners would hit the two mile together, Hendricks & Spritz were joined by Nick Neveu of Maine Coast Waldorf, and Luke Bartol of Maranacook.
Over the final mile Hendricks & Spritz made it a two man race, and it wasn't until the finishing stretch that the Flyers junior made his decisive move to sprint to the regional title. Winning time for Spritz was 17:43.50.
"I wasn't expecting to win today." Spritz said after the race.
Hendricks would cross three seconds later, clearly woozy from his hard effort.
Bartol had his best race of the season to finish third as the junior crossed the line at 17:52.19. He was followed to line three seconds later by Neveu.
The Boothbay duo of Kyle Ames & Blake Erhard were next clocking 18:12.99 & 18:16.66
Maine Coast Waldorf dominated the team race as they tallied 51 points, good for a 58 point victory over the Seahawks of Boothbay. In addition to the fourth place effort of Neveu, freshman Matinicus Neveu finished 8th followed in 9th by sophomore Aiden Kusche. Junior Finn Dierks-Brown was the next runner across the line in 14th, then junior Calvin Soule rounded out the scoring runners in 21st.
Boothbay was paced by Ames & Erhard 6th & 7th efforts. Also scoring for them was freshman Mason Erhard in 33rd, junior Bayly Gaughan-Carrasco was 37th, and freshman Ryan Russell in 42nd.
