Dan Curts of Ellsworth HS will be looking to repeat as Class B Champion in 2013
Check out the returning top 50 individuals based on 5k times from the 2012 season.
Leading the way is defending Class B state champion Dan Curts of Ellsworth. Curts is ready to repeat after his big summer of training. Curts had a strong outdoor season where he won both the 1600 (4:14.02) & 3200m (9:37.54), he would go on to place 5th at the New England meet with a stellar 9:15.90. Class C state runner-up Josef Holt-Andrews is coming off a big outdoor track season that saw him break the Maine all-time best for 5k on the track with a stellar 14:57.76 clocking. Holt-Andrews will be looking for that first invididual XC title, barring injury he is the heavy favorite. Between this too, we may see another Maine athlete run at the highest level with a trip to the Footlocker Nationals well within reach for this duo.
The next pack of runners has strong credentials as well. Jonathan Stanhope of Bangor will be one of several individuals in contention for the Class A title, he also hopes to lead his team to the promise land. A year ago Stanhope was 14th in the Class A, and ran his best time of the season 16:24.55 at the Maine Festival of Champions at Belfast. Jon placed 6th in the Class A 3200m outdoors (10:10.3).
Camden Hill's senior Ben Trapani was 3rd in the Class B state meet last year, and then 62nd at the NE Champion meeet. His best 5k time of last year was a 16:36 clocking at the FOC. Outdoor Trapani was 3rd in both the 1600 & 800 at the Class B state meet.
Cape Elizabeth senior Liam Simpson is the 5th fastest returner, a year ago he finished 6th at the Class B state meet to help his team to the state title. Simpson best effort last fall was a 16:41 clocking at FOC. Liam's best race last fall came at the New England Championship where he finished 33rd overall, he is the 9th fastest returner this fall. On the track Simpson had a strong outdoor season that ended with a DQ at the state meet for running on the white line, he would have finished 3rd if not for that mishap. Liam showed good form in the Beach to Beacon with a 34:54 clocking.
Mt Blue's Josh Horne was the most improved runner in the state in 2012, he would finish 4th in the Class A meet. Horne is the top individual returner in Class A, he had some injury problems outdoor but is now healthy looking forward to repeating his success from a year ago.
Lewiston's Mohamed Awil got an extra season of xc eligibility this spring, he was 5th a year ago in the state meet, and is the #2 returner in Class. In outdoor track Awil finished 5th in the 3200 (10:08). Awil's teammate Isaiah Harris was the top sophomore in the state ayear ago, he finished 6th in the Class A meet, and is the #3 returner this fall. During outdoor track, Harris exp,oded winning the Class A 800m title, then running the seconf fastest 800m in state history (1:53.35) en route to a runner-up finish in the New England Championship meet.
Yarmouth's Braden Becker had his best race of 2012 at the Class B state meet. Becker would finish 5th overall running a personal best 16:51 despite the tough conditions. Braden is the #3 returner in Class B this fall
Hampden's Caleb Lord was 8th in the Class A meet last year, he is the #4 returner in 2013. Lord had a strong outdoor season that saw him finish 3rd in the Class 1600m (4:31.11).
There will be some newcomers to the trails this fall that could have an impact on the top individuals. Specifically watch for Ben Decker of Yarmouth in Class B, Decker will split his time between the pitch and trails this fall. He showed he's in monster shape with his 32:41 clocking for 10k at the Beach to Beacon. In Class A, Thornton Academy's Ryan Cadorette is one to watch to make a successful transition from the soccer fields, Cadorette has shown top form in road races this summer, with a sub 17 clocking for 5k, followed up by a 34:40 for 10k.
