Athlete Spotlight #5: Jonathan Stanhope

Athlete Name: Jonathan Stanhope

School: Bangor

Year of Graduation: 2014

2012 State Meet Finish: 14th Class A 17:10

Best time in a 5K race and in which meet:

My best time for 5k in XC is 16:24, which I ran at Festival of Champions in Belfast last year.

Tell us how your summer training is going?:

My summer training has been going good! I've been running higher mileage than in past seasons and have remained injury free. I've also been doubling a lot during the summer (running twice a day) to reduce the stress of high mileage. I went to a cross country camp and had a solid week of training to start off August.

What are your goals for the upcoming season?:

My goal for the upcoming season is to peak at the right time and to stay focused mentally throughout the long season. If I can do that then I will race well. Bangor is looking to win it's first XC state title so I hope to be a part of that!

How long have you been running and how did you get started?:

I started running in 6th grade. I remember running 6:07 in the gym mile and deciding to join track in the spring because I thought it would make me cool (haha). I played soccer in middle school but ran some USATF cross country races for fun. I've done track every year since 6th grade.

Will you be competing anywhere out of state this season?:

I don't have any out of state meets planned besides New England's, which I hope to be able to qualify for this year. The only meet that I might possibly go to would be Dartmouth relays, but it all depends on my fitness and training.

What is your favorite course to run in Maine?:

My favorite course to run in Maine is the Mt. Blue relays course because it is only 2 miles. I do not like long races. This race also has some pretty sick awards, and a spaghetti dinner, and a scenic road to warm up / cool down on, so its hard not to love that course.

What is the toughest course to run in Maine?:

I'm not sure what the toughest course in Maine is because I haven't run them all. I feel like any course that has hills is pretty hard. The toughest one that I've run on is Cony HS which is where KVACs is held. There is a long hill (around the mile mark?) that takes a lot out of you. The Ellsworth course has some pretty nasty inclines as well, so maybe that's the toughest course.

What meet during the regular season do you put extra emphasize on to compete well at?:

Usually I put a lot of emphasis on a race that our school has misnomered at the "Fun Run". Basically what happens is all of Bangor's fall sports teams (football, soccer, cheering, golf) have a race on our cross country course before the season starts. We have to take this race seriously so that the soccer players don't beat us. It also feels good to run really fast in front of the cheerleaders.

What is your favorite cross country race so far in your high school career?:

My favorite race so far might be the Lawrence XC race my sophomore year. I remember running in a pack with 2 Mt. Blue and 2 Brunswick kids that were faster than me. I ended up setting a 47 second PR and winning the race, and then eating numerous energy bars and pieces of fruit that the school provided at the finish line.

Favorite cross country memory?:

My favorite cross country memory is when Bangor won Eastern Maine regionals in 2011. I remember I had hurt my leg the night before playing ulimate frisbee and couldn't walk the morning of the race, but had heated and massaged my calf enough to give it a try.

When you are not running what is your favorite thing to do?:

When I am not running I can usually be found mowing lawns or sleeping. I like to be outdoors a lot doing various activities.

Favorite quote?:

"Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game." - Michael Jordan

What shoes do you train in?:

I train in mostly Saucony shoes, either Kinvara or Virata.

What shoes do you race in?:

I race in Nike Victorys.

What professional athlete would you most like to meet?:

Rocky Balboa

What is something that most people don't know about you?

Most people don't know that I play baseball every summer, and that I like baseball as much as I like running. I have to schedule my running around baseball because I play on 2 teams so it gets quite busy. This year Bangor is in the Senior League World Series! We play Canada, Philippines, Georgia, and Hawaii this week.
