Athlete Spotlight #3: Brittany Bowman

Athlete Name: Brittany Bowman

School: Camden Hills

Year of Graduation: 2014

2012 State Meet Finish: 3rd in Class B 19:19

Best time in a 5K race and in which meet:

18:56, New Englands in 2011 in Scituate, Rhode Island.

Tell us how your summer training is going?:

Summer training has been decent. This is the first summer I took a little time off after outdoor, so it has taken me more time to build up the mileage but I am hoping that will result in a good postseason in xc where I don’t burnout.

What are your goals for the upcoming season?:

Two of my goals are to PR in the 5k and to qualify for the New England meet as a team for the third year in a row.

How long have you been running and how did you get started?:

I technically ran my first race when I was 3 or 4, but I really didn’t get into running and the idea of training until the end of Elementary School when my parents introduced me to a “real” race, the Falmouth Road Race with thousands of other runners and many more miles than the usual fun runs I ran before. Running that race a few times before the end of Elementary School led me to join the cross country team in Middle School.

Will you be competing anywhere out of state this season?:

I have no regular season meets outside of the state, but I do hope to qualify for New Englands which will be held out of Maine.

What is your favorite course to run in Maine?:

My favorite course to run is Twin Brook because I enjoy the challenging short hills. Belfast is a nice course as well, but I know it almost too well.

What is the toughest course to run in Maine?:

I think the toughest course to run is Cony. The hills part way through the race are both physically and mentally tiring. The finish on the uphill is tough too.

What meet during the regular season do you put extra emphasize on to compete well at?:

During the regular season I like to run well at Festival of Champions. For me it is usually the only opportunity I get to compete against girls from other classes so it is nice to run extra hard to see how I compare to them. It is also nice to compete against girls from outside the KVAC before postseason begins.

What is your favorite cross country race so far in your high school career?:

My favorite cross country race was States in 2011. Heading into the meet I had not won a single meet that entire season, and somehow I had a phenomenal race that day and pulled away with the win and a PR at the time. That was definitely the smartest race I have run and still very memorable.

Favorite cross country memory?:

My favorite cross country memory is at KVACs in 2011 when my team first found out we won the meet. My coach came up to me with a huge smile and whispered, “I thought you were crazy two months ago when you said ‘hey, maybe we can win KVACs or something’, and now here we are KVAC champions.” It was the first time in a long time that the girls xc team was strong so to win a postseason meet was incredible, especially when we started the season least expecting it.

When you are not running what is your favorite thing to do?:

When I’m not running I am usually with my family and friends.

Favorite quote?:

“The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare.” -Juma Ikangaa

What shoes do you train in?:

I train in either Nike or Saucony.

What shoes do you race in?:

I have always raced in Nike.

What professional athlete would you most like to meet?:

One athlete who I would like to meet is Shalane Flanagan.

What is something that most people don't know about you?

Most people don’t know that I enjoy spending time on Maine islands even though there are limited places to run.
