Girls Highlights

Deering scored an upset with a 167-165 win over Thornton Academy. TA seemingly had the win in hand but had a DQ in SR Relay.

The Rams got wins from Katie Farrell in the 400m, along with Mony Prak in the 55m & Rashad Zagon in the High jump.

TA's Tori Daigle had quite a day as she ran the state leading 55m hurdle time of 8.99, she added another state leader in the 200m, 27.35, plus added to her Class A leading long jump of 16-6 1/4.

Alexandra Petteway added to her Class A leading triple jump mark as she went 32-1, she added a state qualifier in the long jump as well 15-7 1/2, which ranks her 3rd in Class A

 

Boys Highlights

Thornton Academy cruised to an easy win as the Trojans tallied 189.5 to outdistance runner-up Biddeford (108), Deering was 3rd (68) with Marshwood 4th (15.5).

Biddeford sprinter James Ociti put on a show as "King James" lit the track on fire in the 400m, as he scorched the opening lap in 23 point, his finishing time was a 50.89 which is easily the fastest time in Maine this winter, and ranks #12 nationally. He came back in one of the closest races of the day in 200m to edge Deering Hany Ramadan 23.56 to 23.57 the times are the #1 & #2 in the state.

TA's speedster Derek Boissonnault equalled teammate Andrew Smith's state leading 6.82 to win the 55m, Smith was 2nd in 6.89.

Justin Gagnon ran another strong 55m hurdles race with a 8.21 clocking, he is the state leader at 8.19. He added another win in the triple jump with a 39-9 1/2 effort

Austin Weigle of Kennebunk cometing for the first time this season leaped 6-0 to win the high jump

Yahya Hussein of Deering ran the #3 2 mile in the state with his 10:17.78

 

SMAA: Bonny Eagle, Cheverus, Gorham, Noble & Portland

Girls Highlights

Gorham scored a win over a depleted Bonny Eagle team & Cheverus 128.5 to 117.5 to 117 in a highly contested team battle. Noble was next with a strong 105 with Portland in 5th with 59.

The Rams got a big day out of Sophia Swiatek who jumped a state leading 9-6 in the pole vault, added a win the shot put 30-7 3/4. Kristen Benson also had a strong day for Gorham with a 7.87 win in the 55m, plus a win out of section 2 in the senior 400m (66.66).

Kyaunna Libby of Bonny Eagle ran a very strong mile as she took the win in 5:29.63, the fastest time in the state this year. Cheverus's Kiera Murray was a few strides behind with a fine 5:31.50.

Boys Highlights

Gorham scoered a win over Cheverus 158-137 while Noble was 3rd with 104. Next was Bonny Eagle with 83 & Portland w/30.

On the track sprinter Jake Dixon of Cheverus had a very strong day as he won the 400m in state #3 (52.22), then came back to blitz the field in the 200m (23.73), that mark is also equal to state #3. He finished off his day with a leadoff leg on the winning 4x200 which ran state #2 1:36.68

Nick White of Cheverus had a strong day in the shot put as he threw a lifetime best 47-7 1/2 to move up to the state #2 ranking.

Gorham's Jon Gray led the way for the Rams. Gray lowered his state leading 800m to 2:04.45 this after finishing 2nd in the 600yd (1:22.82). He would also anchor the Rams winning sprint medley relay

Isaac Yeboah smoked the 55m hurdles in 8.27, the mark is the state #2 this year

Girls Highlights

In a showdown between South Portland & Westbrook two of the top teams in the league it ended in a fitting tie, 146-146. South Portland the defending regular season SMAA champion is back with another strong squad, while upstart Westbrook showed for the second week in a row they're not just a team of the future, they are a team of now. Scarborough finished third (115), with Windham (70) in 4th & Massabesic 63 rounding out the scoring.

South Portland got a big day out of distance ace Shannon Conley as she won the mile 5:31.04 & doubled back in the 800 with a strong (2:30.43).  Conley's mile time is state #2.

Scarborough's Natalie Foster cleared 5-2 in the high jump for the win & the state leading mark

In one of the best races of the day Westbrook's Brittney Arsenault won the 400m over Lauren Magnuson of South Portland with a strong last 100m. Arsenault's winning time of 63.69 is state #2, while Magnuson still ran a strong 64.50

 

Boys Highlights

Scarborough cruised to another SMAA on Saturday as they tallied 215 to South Portland's 157. Windham was third with 102, with Westbrook fourth with 54, & Massabesic in fifth (8)

On the track Scarborough sophomore Colin Tardiff won the jr 400m (55.02) then came back to break 10 minutes in the 2 mile for the first time as he clocked 9:56.1, the mark is 19 seconds up on the state #2. What made the race more impressive was Tardiff had to battle lap traffic in the combined boys & girls two mile, and the officials even ran the bell a lap early.

South Portland continued to rack up the points in the jumps as state leader Michael Cuesta won the triple jump for the 2nd week in a row (41-8 1/4), his teammate Duncan Preston popped off a big mark with a 41-5

Jerry Kenney of Scarborough was a triple winner as the junior won the 55m (7.00) & 200m (24.04) before running a leg on the state leading 4x200m relay (1:36.04)

Mike Pino of Scarborough had the best throw on the day in the shot with his 48-2 1/2 effort.
