A pair of newcomers were selected for the MaineTrackXC Performance of the Week, sophomore Katherine Leggat-Barr of Greely & freshman Luke Laverdiere of Yarmouth for their outstanding WMC debuts last week.
Leggat-Barr made her high school debut xc after playing soccer as a freshman at Twin Brook last Friday, and she was impressive running 19:59 on one of the toughest 5k courses in the state. The sub 20 clocking in her first race is mind boggling considering she was running alone for the entire race, her winning margin was 1:20. If this was the debut, the state is in for a treat this fall as Katherine continues to learn and gain experience with each race. The rest of the state agreed her performance was the best of the week as she gathered 51.43% of the vote.
The boys winner was freshman Luke Laverdiere of Yarmouth who ran a state leading 16:33 for 5k on the NYA course at Royal River Park in Yarmouth. Laverdiere who surged on the xc watchlist to #3 as a result of his outstanding effort, in the process he was over 30 seconds in front #7 on the watchlist, Matt Malcom. Luke's time ranks him 15th fastest amongst all freshman in the country for 5k this fall, the time always solidifies him as individual threat to win the Class B title this fall. Luke garnered 51 votes to finish 7 in front of Chris Walfield from Morse.
Congratulations to both Katherine & Luke on being selected for the MaineTrackXC Performance of the Week
