The SMAA Southwestern championship was a record breaking meet as 7 league records were broken at the University of Southern Maine fieldhouse on Saturday. On the girls side, Scarborough out scored their seeds to surprise for the top spot, while the Red Storm boys set a meet record scoring 215 points.

Thornton Academy's Tori Daigle had an outstanding day as the senior won 3 individual events, and anchor her senior 4x200m relay team to victory. Daigle opened her day with a huge 18-8 1/2 leap in the long jump to shatter her own league of 17-9 3/4. Her jump makes her the second best girl long jumper in the state behind only Kate Hall.

In the hurdle trials she lowered her state leading time to 8.74 as she easily won her heat. She would successfully defend her title in the final with a 8.81 clocking, winning by a margin of .71. In her final individual event of the day the triple jump, Daigle competing only for the second time in the event would break the league record with her 36-4 1/2 leap, the former record was held by Scarborough standout Emilia Scheemaker (36-2 1/4). The distance is the best in the state this year.

Daigle finished out her day with a come from behind victory in the senior girls 4x200, as the Trojans clocked a winning effort of 1:54.37.

For Scarborough who came out with victory they got a strong day from sophomore Ellen Shaw who contributed 24 individual points. She won the jr 55m hurdles in a new league of 8.76, the mark broke 8.81 mark of Tori Daigle. Shaw would also finish as the runner-up in the jr. triple jump (30-4 1/4) & third in the high jump (4-10). Ellen closed out her day with a strong leg on the winning jr. 4x200 relay that clocked 1:53.67.

The Red Storm also got wins from Marissa Carbone in the jr 800m, 2:34.84 and Kacey Foerster in the pole vault (8-6)

Cheverus's Katelyn Gendron swept the junior jumps, as she won the long jump with a personal best 15-8 1/4 leap and the jr triple jump with a 31-11 1/2 effort.

Lauren Magnuson of South Portland won the Sr 55m dash in a Class A #3 effort of 7.57. In that race she held of the challenge of Alexandra Pettaway of Thornton Academy, who is ranked Class A #2.

Bonny Eagle's Elisabeth Redwood had a great day on the track. Redwood went out hard in the sr. 400m to open up a huge margin, she would fade a bit down the stretch but was still rewarded for the effort with a new personal best 60.95, that mark is the new Class A leader.

Another Scot to standout was senior Kyaunna Libby who won the mile in Class A #2 performance of 5:20.67, Libby would double back to win the Sr 800m in 2:27.40.

In the 4x800, Cheverus opened the meet with a state leading 10:20.20 effort. In the same race South Portland ran 10:26.97 for second, that is Class A #3, Scarborough in third in 10:31.30 was Class A #5.

In the junior 400m, Juliana Selser of South Portland clocked 61.54 to outlast Caitlin Lally of Deering 61.64 those times are Class A #2 & #3 respectively.

Deering's Hany Ramadan won the Jim Daley trophy for the outstanding athlete of the regular season, and he showed why with his performances on the track yesterday.

Ramadan's first event was the 600yd, where he broke the league record with his 1:14.47, Hany would be able lower the mark once again as he covered the first 400m in 53.15 en route to his 1:14.17 record breaking mark.

In one of the best races of the day Ramadan matched up against Cheverus sprint star Jake Dixon in the 200m. Coming into the meet Ramadan had the league record of 23.08, one that used to belong to Dixon 23.10. With Dixon in lane 5, and Ramadan inside of him in lane 4, the gun fired, and Dixon went out hard. Heading into the final straight away Dixon held his led slighty, but Ramadan was closing fast. In the end Ramadan's lean would give him the win 22.85 to 22.87, both athletes were easily under the old league record. The marks are state #1 & #2 respectively.

Dixon didn't get shut out of the win column though, the University of Virginia bound senior won the 400m in 50.70, he was chasing the record of James Ociti 50.47. Jake went for it as he came through the first 200m in 22.9, but was unable to hold on down the stretch to get the record mark.

Another record breaking mark came from the 55m hurdles where the top two hurdlers in the state Justin Gagnon of Biddeford & Scarborough's Griffin Madden squared off. Madden entered the final with the top time from the trials 7.96, while Gagnon clocked 8.0. They ran even over the first three hurdles before Madden gained a slight edge over hurdle 4 and would hold on to win it at the line 7.79 to 7.80. Both athletes were under the previous record mark of 7.84 held by Gagnon.

In the junior shot put, Biddeford's Matt Brady twice broke the league record, his final mark was a 48-10 1/4 which currently ranks him Class A #5. The former record was 47-7 3/4 held by Mike Pino of Scarborough

For the winning team from Scarborough they tallied a league record 215 points, and got contributions in all but 2 events. Scarborough got 30 individual points from sophomore Sam Rusak who won the jr 55m hurdles (8.51), the Jr high jump (5-10) & the pole vault (14-0). He also ran a leg on the winning Jr 4x200m relay team

The Red Storm won all four relays on the day, taking the 4x800 (8:35.33), the sprint medley (3:47.82), plus the jr 4x200m 1:39.90, and the sr 4x200m 1:36.88

Other wins for Scarborough came from Colin Jones in the Sr. 800m as he came from behind in the final strides to take it in 2:04.40 to nip Tyler Lebel of TA 2:04.47. Jacob Terry won the 2 mile in 9:53.82.

Noble's Tyler Joy had a breakthrough performance int he 55m as he stunned the field to win in a personal best 6.73, his mark moves him to Class A #3. Joy entered the long jump with the state leading mark 21-0 1/2, he would improve his state leading mark with a new personal best of 21-5 1/2. He had to jump that well as behind him Michael Cuesta of South Portland jumped state #2 (21-1 1/4) & Eric Webb of Winhdam state #3 (21-0)

The senior shot put was won by South Portland's Daniel Guiliani with a heave of 56-2. The battle for 2nd place was a good one as Nick White of Cheverus 50-8 3/4 edged out Hugh McSorley of Scarborough 50-8 1/2 those mark rank the as the top 3 throwers in Class A.

Deering's Yahye Hussein won the mile in Class A #3 time of 4:32.52 as he kicked his way to win over Colin Tardiff of Scarborough 4:33.43

Thornton Academy's Keegan Fowler won two junior sprint events, taking the 55m dash in 7.0 and the 400m in 54.67.
