Anna Slager, Kialeigh Martson & Serena McKenzie ran together for 2.5 miles in the Southern Maine Class A Regonal XC Championship at Twin Brook in Cumberland on Saturday.
But it was the famous pain cave, a steep hill with a half mile remaining that Slager, a sophomore from Gorham made her move.
"I broke away at the pain cave." Slager said post race.
It was a repeat win for Slager as she captured the Western Maine Regional title a year ago, her winning time was 19:48.37
Looking ahead to next week, Anna said "States is a whole different animal, I'm just going race how I know to race." A year ago she finished 7th.
Bonny Eagle's Kialeigh Marston was the runner-up, the senior who won the race as a sophomore, has been injury free and running at a high level this fall. Her finish combined with freshman Ami Beaumier (4th) & Kayla Raymond (5th) secured the team title for the Scots.
The Scots got a tremendous race from senior Elisabeth Redwood, more known for her speed on the track, Redwood had a great last mile moving all the way up to 12th with a 20:44, her time was a personal best by 15 seconds.
