In her own words: Tia Tardy - Balancing Act

Hey everyone,

Congratulations to all of the teams on their recent meets. There are so many of you starting out with impressive times, distances and heights. I am excited to have been asked to blog for MileSplit, and hope you will share and respond as we go through the season together. First, just a little housekeeping to get out of the way... likely most of you already know this or have figured it out but I transferred to Orono this year as a junior. It was to allow me to have more opportunity to develop my interest and talent in the performing arts. I am sure it's really challenging for schools to offer programs that address every student's interest and I feel very fortunate that my principal at MA believed in my musical interests and talent, and was willing to support my request to transfer to Orono. It's never an easy thing to start over and fit in, but I have to say, I come from a great community in Lincoln and am so fortunate to have been welcomed by the Orono community. They wow me every day with their love and support. As far as my running has gone, it has been great. Orono has more than a fair share of Maine's talent and that keeps me pushing myself too. With schools and general public often focused primarily on the "team" sports, there seems to be a mix of understandings when it comes to the running sports, and how it is a team and individual sport at the same time. I came across this article and it really spoke to me and my challenge of trying to figure out the balance of soaring to my personal best each and every day without disappointing my team or community of friends at the same time. I wish you great happiness and health as we head to the finishline and into a New Year.
