State Champion spotlight: Emma Egan Yarmouth HS

Senior Emma Egan of Yarmouth not only won the Class B girl high jump title for the second year in a row, she once again broke the state meet record with her winning effort of 5-6. Coming off a state meet record jump, Egan had her best block start of her season in the 55m final, and crossed the line first to win her second title of the day. We caught up with Emma to ask her about her preparation before the meet, her mindset on race day, and about goals for the high jump outdoors.

What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

In the weeks before the state meet, I worked with my personal trainer Peter Clark nearly every day after school on my strength and balance along with track workouts with my team. I have found that the balance between the two, along with proper rest and nutrition, help me to compete the best I can. The night before states, I followed my usual pre-meet routine and watched Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and ate way too much pasta. This is my way of keeping my mind off the competition, and obviously pasta is great so I eat it as much as possible.

How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

When I compete, I try not to think too much about the competition itself and just try to have fun. A lot of the time when I'm waiting to run or jump I act like a total goofball and dance and joke around with my teammates to stop nerves from kicking in. I ended up pretending that states was any other meet and just had fun with it. Because it's my senior year, I feel like it's much more important to enjoy the process of competing than worrying about it. In my mind, I went into the meet knowing I had done enough training to accomplish solid heights and times, and states was just a time to show everyone how hard I had worked during the season.

You came into the meet the heavy favorite, and state meet record holder. What did it mean to repeat as champion and break your state meet record?

I am incredibly happy with how the state meet went! I went in hoping to maybe jump 5'4 or 5'5 and break the record, but I had no expectations to clear 5'6 again. I was extremely proud of myself for jumping it for the second week in a row and on the 1st attempt. I didn't think it was possible. As far as winning states goes, I am very pleased, but I am even happier to share my success in high jump with the other girls who were at states that day. I think we all had fun jumping, and no matter the scores each girl was incredibly supportive of the successes and failure of the other girls.

Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?

My biggest goal this indoor season was to get ready for outdoor track. I tend to treat indoor as a preseason for outdoor, and always hope to improve my times and jumps before the outdoor season begins. As far as high jump goes, my goal was to hit 5'6. At outdoor states last year I was extremely close to hitting that mark, so going into indoor I felt that it could be an attainable goal. I think that I have definitely achieved my indoor goals, and I feel ready for outdoor to begin.

You jumped 5-6 three different times this winter, heading into Outdoors what do you think you can jump on a perfect day?

My goal for outdoor is to clear my own height, 5'9. I know that this seems like a longshot, but on many of my 5'6 jumps I had quite a bit of room. I think that with proper training, nutrition, and a good mental day I could PR by quite a bit. Overall, I would really like to work more on improving my speed, balance, and strength, as I feel that this will help me to improve my times in sprints and translate very well into my jumps. My final goal for outdoor is to enjoy every second of it. With graduation looming over my shoulder, I know my time on the Yarmouth team is coming to a close, and I hope to enjoy every day I can spend with my teammates and coaches. The outdoor track team is always incredibly kind, funny, and inspiring, and I can't wait to train and compete alongside them this spring.
