State Champion spotlight: Trever Gray Waterville HS

State Champion spotlight: Trever Gray Waterville HS

Waterville senior Trever Gray repeated as Class B shot put champion with his throw of 52-7 3/4. Gray went on to finish as the New England runner-up 2 weeks later. We caught with him to talk about his preparation, winning states back to back, an his goals for the outdoor season.

What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

My preparations were the same as all other meets, spent time clearing my mind. Preparing mental as well as physically.

How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

I didn't feel pressured heading into the meet, I know I am capable of big throws. I just knew I needed to stay relaxed.

You lost the KVAC Shot Put the week before the state meet, but came back to win your second straight indoor title at the state meet. Did you do anything different at the state meet that helped you out? What does it mean to you to be a two time state champion?

Losing the KVAC total to Curtis was a gut check. I knew I needed to step it up if I wanted to win the state total again. It means a lot to win multiple state titles. It proves that all the grinding and hard works pays off in the post season.

Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?

Coming into the season my goals were to stay consistent and break the school record. Which i did. I PR'd with a throw of 56'11 this season but I know that 60 foot throw is right around the corner so I'm not content.

You have dominated Class B throwing over the last year winning indoor/outdoor shot put titles, plus the discus. At the New England Championship you finished as the runner-upon the shot put. What did it mean to earn All-New England? and Heading into your final season what are your goals?

New England's was a great meet, I knew there was going to be some great competition and could see how I stacked up against the best. I started off slow with some low 50's. Feeling pretty sluggish. I was the last guy to make finals at 7th, so I knew I needed to kick the speed up a lot. In finals I threw a 54'8. Which moved me into 2nd. Coming into my final throw I knew I had to put it all into this throw. I threw the shot put out to the 59 foot mark and just missed keeping it in. Could have took 1st. But mentally that puts me in a good place knowing I'm capable of bigger throws. It meant a lot to be the runner up.
My goals are 60 in shot and 180 for discus. I want the discus state record which I believe is very achievable. I look forward to outdoor!
