State Champion spotlight: Griffin Madden Scarborough HS

State Champion spotlight: Griffin Madden Scarborough HS

Senior Griffin Madden of Scarborough hurdled his way to the Class A State title this winter. Madden had the fastest time in the state of 7.69, which placed him third in the New England Championship. We caught up with him to ask him about his preparations, what getting second did for his motivation, and making the podium at New Englands

What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

My preparations leading up to the state championship were pretty much all mental. I had to just focus on my own race, all the physical aspects have already been done. It was all just whether or not I decided to "show up".

How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

I've been racing since 7th grade and it has helped making states freshman year so I could learn early on how to deal with the emotions and pressure that come with a state meet. It just felt like any other meet.

After finishing second a year ago in the state meet, you were able to win the title this year. Did last year motivate you the season, and what went through your mind when you crossed the finish line first?

After last year, coming in second is different from any other place. You think about what you could've done better to win. That's what I thought about for a long time. I realized I needed to work on form as a very first priority. And once I crossed that finished line I prepared so much for that one moment, I knew that I did what I went out to do and get a state championship.

Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?

Coming into the season my only goal was to get a PR and after that just keep improving every single race. I didn't really think of any limits. I only thought of what I could do to get faster. At this point I can say that I have achieved them.

You just competed in the New England Championship, and were able to finish 3rd overall. Coming into the season did you have a goal to make the podium at NE's? How did it feel to PR and finally break the Scarborough school record?

I really only thought about New England's after the state meet. I didn't really have a plan for them at the beginning of the season. But once I finished the state meet I only thought about what I could do to make the finals and from there try to win it. As for the school record, I've been getting close for along time. It feels really good to finally make that mark, and it is one that will never forget.
