In his on words: Luke Laverdiere - Winning & Losing

Hey everyone!

This past weekend showcased some of the incredible cross-country talent we have in this state. There were some pretty incredible races to watch! Whether you achieved the goals you had in mind or not, I wanted to congratulate everyone on a truly great season of cross-country! It is difficult to do what we do, and we did it with style and grace this fall.

As the state championship was this past weekend, I wanted to share my general thoughts about "winning" and "losing". Getting a little philosophical on y'all, I basically don't believe that there is a "winner" and "loser" in life. This is definitely contrasting to this sport where there is only one clear "winner", but it's important to keep a perspective. While it may feel great to work really hard for something and come out on top, it feels worse when you work really hard for something and don't achieve it. Believe me, I get it. I know what it feels like to set a goal and come up short. I can clearly remember how devastated I felt after last year's state championship, where I suffered a humiliating defeat and ran the worst race of my season while contending for an individual state title. I remember it took me a while, but I eventually got over it. I realized that I just had to move on from it and get ready for the next thing.

I guess what I'm really trying to say is that winning feels great and losing is difficult to handle sometimes, but in the end winning and losing shouldn't really matter because we should all just be in this together to have fun. That, in my opinion, is most important thing.

For those of you who will be competing at New England's this weekend, good luck! Let's show everyone what kind of talent we have in this state!
