Name: Anthony Clavette
School: Scarborough High School
What was your most memorable race/meet?
My most memorable meet was the outdoor Class A state meet in 2019, my last ever state meet. Our team won the state title, declaring Scarborough High School as winners of the triple crown; XC, Indoor, and Outdoor track state champions all in one year. I was able to contribute 19 points (first, second, seventh) to our win, but my most memorable moment from the meet was watching our 4x400 relay team win on the final stretch, clinching the victory because the meet came down to the final event.
Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?
My biggest competition was Travis Snyder in the hurdles and triple jump, although my hurdle record against him may not show it(1-26). I am proud of my triple jump(5-2) and high jump(1-0) records against him though.
What was your greatest accomplishment?
One of my great accomplishments was high jumping 6'6" in my final state meet, winning my third individual state title. More importantly, an even greater accomplishment was being able to contribute points to five different state titles won by some of the greatest teams the state of Maine has ever seen.
If you could do it all over again what would you change about your xc/track&field career in high school?
I wouldn't change a thing. I learned valuable lessons from every mistake as they were necessary learning moments.
What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
A difficult obstacle I overcame happened three times. I was seeded second all three times I won the high jump state title, so I had to overcome the mental obstacle of not thinking of myself as the best. I simply had to focus on only myself and performing to the best of my ability despite how my competitors and I performed earlier in the season.
What will you miss the most?
Extended tempo warmup on Friday nights in indoor track.
What advice you would give to younger athletes?
Focus on yourself in present time, and use your mistakes as motivation. There is no need to focus on poor performances in the past or worry about what your competitors are doing.
What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?
My coaches have completely defined the athlete and person I have become. They have not only helped me better myself on the track, but have taught me what it means to work hard in order to achieve my goals.
What are your college plans?
I plan to attend University of Hartford to study Computer Science as well as to continue high jumping.
Who would you like to say thank you to?
I would like to thank Coach Veilleux, Coach Ross and Coach Macquinn for mentoring me as an athlete and as a person these last four years. I would also like to thank Jarett Flaker for convincing me to do Youth Recreational Track with him when we were just ten years old.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I beat Jarett Flaker in the 55-meter hurdles on February 11th, 2017.
