Victoria Bossong's track and field resume is impressive. The Cheverus junior will be looking to add another line to it on Saturday at the New England Track & Field Championship in Massachusetts at the Reggie Lewis Center. The sprint star will be one of the favorites in the both the 55m & 300m dash events.
At the Class A state meet two weeks ago Bossong won three individual events (55m, 400m & 200m) for the second consecutive season. She broke her own state meet record in the 400m running 56.95, and equaled her own record in the 55m dash. A year ago at New England's Victoria ran a Maine all-time best for 300m with her third place 39.68 effort at New England's.
Bossong should have no issues being on the podium in both events on Saturday and it certainly won't be a surprise to see her standing in the top spot if all goes well.
The 1000m race should be a good one especially if South Portland senior Anna Folley has a race like she did at the Class A state meet that saw her power away from sophomore Mia-Claire Kezal of Thornton Academy on the final lap to set a new state meet record with her 2:16.06. Folley enters as the third seed while Kezal who ran 2:17.44 at states is seeded 5th in the event.
Hurdle standout Emily Labbe the Class A state champion from Scarborough will be looking for her first podium finish. The senior clocked the second fastest time in state history, 8.32 to win her second consecutive state title in the 55m hurdles. Last weekend she won the USATF New England title at Harvard as she clocked a personal best 9.07 over 60m hurdles. She enters the competition ranked fourth fastest overall. Also watch for Shukri Deqow the talented freshman from Lewiston who ranks seventh fastest with her state freshman record 8.43 effort from the Class A state meet.
The two mile features two returning All-New England athletes in Gorham's Kate Tugman and Hampden Academy's Helen Shearer. Tugman is coming off a tremendous state meet that saw her win both the mile and two miles races, a year ago she placed third running a personal best 10:55.54. Shearer who was the runner-up to Tugman in both races at states placed fifth a year ago running 11:00.72.
