2020 Maine XC Watchlist: Daniel McCarthy, Bangor HS

Notable Finishes: 2nd Festival of Champions 2019, 3rd KVAC Championship 2019, 3rd Northern Maine Class A Regional 2019, 5th Class A State 2019, 15th New England Championship 2019

Comments: McCarthy's sophomore season was one to remember as he placed fifth at the Class A state meet to help the Rams to a runner-up team finish, and then went on to earn All-New England honors with a 15th place effort at the New England championship. Now a junior expect even bigger things from McCarthy this fall as he looks to guide his Bangor team to the top.

How has COVID-19 affected you?

It has made it difficult to create a normal daily routine and therefore different to have a consistent running routine.

What has your summer training consisted of? How much mileage are you putting in?

Over the summer I did a lot of cross-training and strength training, but I'm not sure how many miles I ran.

What are your goals for the upcoming season?

I would love to see our team winning states.

What is your favorite workout that makes you feel most prepared for success?

Mile repeats are the hardest but they always make me feel as though I have gained fitness.

What did you learn from the last xc season that will help you improve in 2020?

I learned how important the depth of a team is for success.

How is your team looking for the fall?

Our team looks fantastic, possibly the best the school has seen in a long time.

How do you stay motivated when you don't want to run?

I think about what will happen later on when I'm racing if I don't run, and the pain or preforming poorly outweighs the pain of training hard.

What is the greatest piece of advice you've ever received in the sport?

I couldn't pick a general piece of advice I have been giving that is more noteworthy than others, but when I'm not motivated my coach and teammate always say something that keeps me going.

What are the top three "little things" that you do to prevent injury?

1.) Don't run in the cold in shorts

2.) Stretch

3.) Don't over run

What is the one thing you have done during COVID-19 that you have never had time for in the past?

I have gotten into biking recently

What's the farthest you've ever run at one time?

I ran 14 miles once on a two-mile loop.

If every day were a holiday, what would yours be?

I love Christmas it has happy energy around it.

Favorite subject in school?

I always have a good time in my English class due to the teachers and my friends, also writing has always been something that I enjoy.

If you could go on a run with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? Why?

I feel as though Kevin Hart would be able to take my mind off some of the pain.

If your teammates gave you a superlative, what would it be?

I like to think that I'm known as a hard worker and I'm definitely seen as a competitive person.
