Orono junior Ruth White made her first national level cross-country race a memorable one as she finished fourth to earn a trip to the Champs (formerly Footlocker) Cross-Country Nationals in San Diego in two weeks. White the two time defending New England and Maine Class C champion ran in a qualifying position throughout the race.
Results
Through the first 2k of the race White was positioned in fifth coming through in 7:15.7. She dropped back to sixth over the next 2k which she covered in 7:25.5 before she kicked strong over the final 1k to move up to fourth overall. White's last 1k was 3:08.6 which is just off 5 minute mile pace. Her finishing effort of 17:51.8 on the storied course at Van Cortlandt Park in New York place her among the all time Maine greats. Most recently Sofie Matson of Falmouth (2019) qualified running 18:00.
