Young had a great junior season that saw her finish third in the Southern Regional and then seventh in the state meet in Class B. At states she was less than 100% but still gave it a great effort for a seventh-place finish and advanced to the New England Championship where she finished 42nd. Emma was the indoor 800m runner-up clocking 2:22.63. During the outdoor season, she ran 11:48.38 for 3200m, and 5:20.40 for 1600m both personal bests. Unfortunately, she missed the outdoor state meet due to injury. Look for Young to be at the front of most races this fall, she has gotten better each season and is looking to lead the Capers to the state title this fall.

Getting to Know Emma

How has your summer training gone? Approximately how many miles have you logged?

My summer training has gone well! Missing out on States this past outdoor track season due to a collarbone fracture two days before the meet has left me very motivated and happy to be back. I have logged about 200 miles this summer since returning from surgery and restrictions.

What are you looking forward to during the 2023 XC season?

I'm really looking forward to seeing what my team can do this XC season. The Cape girls are a very close-knit group of resilient, smart, strong runners with big hearts. Nothing makes me happier than getting to run with them each day!

What are your goals for the season?

The biggest goal is to win the team title at States. What happened last year has left us hungry for it, and I will do everything in my power to help create the team dynamic that makes Cape so successful and prepare myself physically to contribute at the best of my ability.

The biggest takeaway from the 2022 XC Season?

For me, the biggest takeaway from the 2022 XC season is that every time I have the chance to toe the line is a gift. Having 30% of our high school out sick during the week leading up to States was a reminder of what a special opportunity it is just to be healthy and fortunate enough to be on the start line.

How do you stay motivated when you don't want to go for a run?

Staying motivated goes back to reminding myself that I don't "have" to run, I "get" to run. There are a lot of people who would give anything to be able to do what I do. I also like to think of my team. They are putting in the work for me, so I'm going to get out there and put in the work for them.
