2023 Outlook

The Windjammers ran their best race of the season at the Class A state meet a year ago as they finished a surprising third place. With the entire top seven from that squad back in 2023 expectations will be high this season for Camden Hills. Walker Hedrich was the top finisher at the state meet last fall and will look to continue to lead again this year. Watch for sophomore Sam Tooley who was the fifth runner a year ago, he had the fastest high school time for a Maine boy at the Beach to Beacon 10k with his 35:36 effort. With another year of experience with this team Camden Hills won't sneak up on anyone this fall, and will contend for a podium finish.

Coach Helen Bonzi's Comments

Neither the boys' nor the girls' teams from CHRHS train together over the summer. I know they're all good friends and get together and run sometimes, but I don't see them much. I've tried to schedule team runs, but everyone is so busy working, vacationing with their families, doing internships, whatever. It's impossible to set anything up. I give them a training plan at the end of the track and field season. But I literally won't see them for the first time until Monday to find out what they've been up to if they followed the plan, and how it's going. It will be great to have everyone back together and training as a team!

At this point, I can't set expectations for the team since I haven't seen them in so long. I would like to say that both the boys and the girls will be challenging for state titles this year, but I really have no idea what shape everyone is in since I haven't seen most of them since last spring. I know both teams want to do really well this season. They've learned what they are capable of and that they could pull off state championship titles, but it's going to take a lot of hard work and dedication.
