The weather didn't stop the Southern Maine Classic in 2024. The conditions weren't perfect with temperatures rising into the 80's but that didn't stop plenty from running lifetime best in a day filled with new faces making a statement.
In the first race of the day the freshman/sophomore boys it was Atticus Merriam of Scarborough who started conservatively before opening up over the last two miles as he set the standard with a personal best of 16:45.98 effort that was good for 10th best overall.
Boys F/S Race
Boothbay/Wiscasset sophomore Karen Higgins didn't waste any time in the freshman/sophomore girls race to get to the front. Higgins who clocked 18:53 a week ago at Brunswick showed that was no fluke as she cruised to a 16-second victory over Allie Schmitt of Cheverus, 19:20.59 to 19:36.46. The times were the fifth and seventh fastest on the day.
Girls F/S Race
The junior/senior boys race was a good one, with Aidan Ring of York, Enzo Giampaolo of Lewiston, and Ethan Keller of Scarborough breaking away from the pack. Ring and Giampaolo were the best over the last mile as they battled down the homestretch with Ring holding on with a new personal best of 15:43.82. Giampaolo who raced on Friday also added a personal best too with his 15:45.42. A bloodied Keller also set a personal best with his third-place finish (15:56.34)
Boys J/S Race
In the final race of the day Laurel Driscoll of Scarborough led at the halfway mark with Olivia Wentworth of Yarmouth on her heels. Wentworth was the strongest over the final mile as Driscoll had trouble with the heat and didn't finish. She powered home with a huge breakthrough performance of 18:28.83 to turn back a talented field by 38 seconds.
