2010 Class C Boys XC Preview
Class C Boys Western Maine
The defending Class C Western Maine regional champions, Freeport Falcons are the favorite to repeat the feat in 2010. Last fall Freeport waltzed to the title winning by 29 points, only to be upended at the state meet by Boothbay by 1 point.
The Falcons return 5 of their top 7, with senior Griffin Day (3rd in 2009) leading the way. The other returners include junior Taylor Saucier (27th in 2009), along with seniors Max Jennings (29th in 2009), Bennett Wade (34th in 2009) & Spencer Egan (69th in 2009). Ending the season on a sour note has Freeport motivated for even more success this fall, with a roster of 28 boys heading into the season, this will be one of the most talented and deepest squads in school history.
The two teams expected to challenge for the title are the 2009 regional runner-up Merriconeag and the 2009 Class C State champions, Boothbay Seahawks. Last Fall Merriconeag added some hardware to the trophy case, they're back with all 7 runners from that squad looking to add some more in 2010. Sophomores Jack Pierce (5th in 2009 pictured right) & Juan Mesones (9th in 2009) give Merriconeag a strong 1-2 punch at the front of the pack. Combined with seniors Phineas Samuelson (23rd in 2009) & Jake Kolda (35th in 2009), along with junior Tyler O'Brien (32nd in 2009) give them some very strong quality depth.
For the defending state champion Boothbay Seahawks, they will look to add the regional title that eluded them last fall to the trophy case. Boothbay returns 6 of their top 7 from last fall, including individual title threat Chase Brown (2nd in 2009). Behind Brown, there is a strong supporting cast that includes: Junior Tom Brown (21st in 2009), senior Nate Schwehm (missed regional meet finished 25th at the state meet), sophomore Stephen Barter (43rd in 2009) & junior Nate James (44th in 2009).
A healthy Monmouth team could make a push as well, don't count them out in 2010.
Other Teams
Monmouth: Finished 5th last fall, but had a lot of injuries, if they stay healthy they will be very good. Brothers Matt and Patrick McInnis will led the charge. Matt was 13th last fall while Patrick was 14th.
Lisbon: The Greyhounds have a strong program, last fall they were 6th and snatched the last spot in the state meet. They'll look to improve this fall. They will be led by senior Alex Branson (18th in 2009)
Waynflete: The Flyers were 8th last fall, and have a solid returning team. They have a shot at the state meet this fall. They will be led by a new to XC runner Asbhir Horor, who is one the individual favorites.
North Yarmouth Academy: NYA was 4th last fall earning their way to the state meet. They'll be looking to keep up the strong tradition and earn another trip to the state meet. Junior Cam Regan (12th in 2009) is back as the #1 runner.
Madison: The bulldogs finished 12th last fall, they should be much better this fall. They will be led by defending individual champion, junior Matt McClintok
St. Dominic: St. Dom's was 11th in 2009. Junior Matt Yarnevich (49th in 2009) is the top returner
Winthrop: The Ramblers ran to a 19th place finish in 2009. Top returner is Kameron Souza (20th in 2009)
Traip Academy: Traip didn't have 5 runners cross the line at the regional meet last fall. Senior Brigham Rees is the fastest returner, he was injured last fall and didn't run in the regional meet
Teams without 5 returning runners: Telstar, Hall-Dale, Wiscasset, Dirigo, Carrabec, Valley

Individuals
This fall the individual race could be special in Class C Western Maine. With the top 3 back from a year ago, and the addition of a newcomer to the scene, could make this race the one everyone is talking about and will pay the most attention too.
Defending champion Matt McClintok (Madison pictured left) is back to defend his title, and he'll have plenty of challenges this fall. McClintok won by 11 seconds last fall, he followed that up with a state championship the following week, breaking 17 minutes for the first time on the Twin Brook course. McClintok showed strong fitness with his effort in the Beach to Beacon 10k, running 34:24. Matt had a strong outdoor track season as well last spring, finishing 3rd in the 1600m 4:33.83 for a new personal best and 9:58.62 for 3200m, good for 2nd place at the Class C State meet.
Boothbay junior Chase Brown, the regional and state runner-up last fall, will be shooting for the top spot as well in 2010. Brown (pictured below) closed the gap to 9 seconds at the state meet last fall and showed he's put in the miles this summer with his Maine High school leading 33:58.9. Chase had a good spring on the track as well, with new personal best of 4:40.11 in the 1600m & 10:06.65 for 3200m.
Another runner to key an eye on is senior Griffin Day (Freeport pictured left) last fall Day placed 3rd in the regional and state meet. Last fall Day burst onto the radar with some strong post season performances. Griffin will look to continue that success in 2010. Day set personal best during the indoor track season from 800m to the 3200m but missed the outdoor season due injury.
The real surprise this fall may come from junior Asbhir Horor (Waynflete), who is running XC for the first time. Horor had a breakout spring on the track, and if his success was an indication of how good he'll be on the trails, we could be in for something special this fall. Horor placed 2nd in the Class C state meet over 1600m, clocking a personal best 4:28.13, then coming back to run a personal best in the 800m to nab 4th. Horor tuned up for the fall xc by running 3 5k's this summer, each one under 17 minutes, with his last effort a 16:34 run.
With this amount of talent the race for the title should be fast and exciting, stay tuned to MaineTrackXC for coverage of Class C all fall.
