Southwest Classic Girls Preview

 

Varsity Girls Teams

The girls varsity race at the Southwest Classic should very competitive as 6 of the top 12 teams from the latest MaineTrackXC fan/athlete poll will be running. The meet is highlighted by the #1 ranked Cheverus Stags, the defending Class A champion, also running are #3 Massabesic, #8 York, #10 Yarmouth, #11 Scarborough, 7 #11 Windham. This meet should really answer some questions about the pecking order in the SMAA. The meet could have been a chance to see the top 3 teams in the poll face off, but #2 Cape Elizabeth is headed to the New Balance Ocean State Invitational in RI this weekend, it's the 5th year in a row they have taken their talents to the meet. Also the #6 ranked Falmouth Yachtswoman won't be running their entire varsity team. 

 

#1 ranked Cheverus is coming off a great performance at Gorham that saw them average 19:31 for 5k, for their top 5. They have the strength up front with Emily Durgin & Fiona Hendry both under 19 minutes, then some talented freshman running in the #3 & #4 spots with newcomer Lizzie Gwilym rounding out the top 5.

#3 Massabesic is coming off a fine day at Gorham, they were 11 points behind #1 Cheverus. They averaged 20:23 for their top 5. The Mustangs are led by the 1-2 of Jocelyn Acheson & Charlotte Pierce

#8 York has run well this year, but has yet to be a full strength as last year's #1 runner Michaela Swiatek has been sidelined with an IT band injury. In her absence freshman Heather Evans has led the way for the Wildcats.

 Individual Preview

Everyone is anticipating the individual match-up between 2009 footlocker finalist Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) & Emily Durgin (Cheverus), this will highlight the meet, as both look to be very fit based on performances to date. Leonardi is coming off back to back 3 mile races, clocking under 18 minutes in both, while Durgin ripped the Gorham course over 5k last week in 18:10. While the race for the title maybe between these two there should be some other great individual race going on too. Let's take a look at some of the top performers.
