KVAC Championship Preview

KVAC XC CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

Class A Boys Individual

Defending champion Harlow Ladd (Mess) is back to defend his KVAC Class A title in 2011. Ladd will face a tough test starting with Andy Reifman-Packett (Mt. A) who placed 3rd last year, and then went on to be the Class A state runner-up. Behind Ladd & Reifman-Packett is a much improved Benson Worthington (Brun) who is running his best heading into the championship season. Worthington's teammate Jamie Ross is another threat, along with Bangor's Jonathan Stanhope.  Others that figure to be battling for  top 5 spot are Justin Tracy & Sully Jackson of Mt. BlueMohamed Barre & Kevin Lavertu (Lewiston), Lucas Bourget & Justin Leclair (Edward Little)

Class A Boys Team

#4 ranked Bangor heads into the KVAC Championship as the favorite, this is new territory for the Rams, who have excelled under first year coach Adam Goode this fall. Bangor has Jonathan Stanhope up front followed by a strong pack behind him. Lewiston is the team that figures to challenge the Rams for the top spot, the Blue Devils have a strong 1-2-3 which should help in a championship format.  #12 Hampden will be in the mix, but they may have to do it without one of their top runners NIck Kopf who is injured. Watch for Brunswick who has the best 1-2 punch in the conference, defending champion Mt. Ararat who is improving, and Mt Blue who had their best meet of the year last week.

Class A Girls Individual

Newcomer to XC Erzsebet Nagy (Law) comes into the conference meet as the favorite to win the title. Nagy has had a great fall, with perhaps her best performance coming at the Festival of Champions where she placed runner-up to Abbey Leonardi. Look for Addie Cullenberg (Mt. Blue), Teresa Murphy (Brun), along with the Mt Ararat duo of Kelly Lynch & Lauren McNett  & Hampden duo Kylee Parker & Elizabeth Labun to be in the mix for a top 5 spot. Can anyone catch Nagy? mosy likely not but the individual race will be very competitive nonetheless

Class A Girls Team

Defending champion Mt. Ararat is the favorite to win again, The Eagles started out slow this year dealing with various injuries but are close to full strength heading into the championship season. Mt Blue has been one of the top team in the KVAC all fall they'll contend for a top 2 spot with Brunswick & Hampden Academy.

Class B Boys Individual

The individual title is wide open in Class B with a handful of runner with a legitimate shot of being the top Class B runner. Mason Vermilion (Medomak) scored the top in Class B 17:01 on his home course in September and in the process earned the win over Ben Trapani (Camden) by 11 seconds. Trapini took round 2 last week with a 32 second advantage over Vermillion on his home course.  Add in Nick Shuckrow of Winslow who was faster than both at the Festival of Champions and you have the makings of a great race. A sleeper in the field maybe Kelby Mace (Maranacook) who had his best race of the year placing 3rd at the Mt. Blue Relays, his time was 23 seconds faster than Shuckrow's. The winner may come from this group or someone else may emerge as a surprise winner, I wouldn't be surprised either way.

Class B Boys Team

Expect the Maranacook Black Bears & Medomak Valley Panthers to be a close race for the Class B team title. Both squads have some front running power, but ultimately it'll come down to the #4 & #5 runners. In the only matchup between the two teams, Medomak finished in front of Maranacook at the Festival of Champions

Class B Girls Individual

The individual race promises to be one of the best races in state this season with some of the top runners squaring off against eachother. 2x championAbby Mace of Maranacook will be aiming for her 3rd conference title in 4 years, and this one may be the most difficult to win. Mace missed last year's race with injury. This year she'll have to contend with newcomer Bethanie Brown of Waterville, who has run very well in his first xc season. Mace did win the only head to head matchup at the festival of champions where Brown went out with Leonardi only to fade in the later stages of the race. Add in freshman Willow Parker of Camden Hills who has been tearing up courses this fall, and has the fastest 5k time of the field this fall 18:59. Parker's teammate Brittany Bowman is the underdog despite being the defending champion. All this talent will make for a intense race.

Class B Girls Team

#3 ranked Camden Hills is the heavy favorite to win the team title, The Windjammers have had a dream season to this point so far as we enter the championship season, led by the best 1-2 duo in Class B they have the low numbers up front with a young & talented squad behind them.  The race for the runner-up position should be very good with cross town rivals Winslow & Waterville expected to be in the mix.
