The sodden fields greeted the Western Maine Regional XC runners this morning as they arrived at Twin Brook Recreation Park in Cumberland. The Class A girls started the action off, and Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) wasted no time going to front, she would never have to look back as she cruised to the fastest time on the day for any girl, 18:05.59. Cheverus Girls went 2-3-4 despite Emily Durgin not finishing to hold off Massabesic 45-51 for the regional title. The A boys were next, and we saw a repeat as Nick Morris (Scarborough) pulled away over the last 1.5 miles to win in 17:03.3, while his Red Storm team had 4 in the top 15 to score a low of 61 to defeat runner-up South Portland 101. Class C girls was next, Meagan Thomas Lisbon moved her way through the field to claim the title 21:11.60, teamwise Merriconeag was dominate with 5 in the top 15. The boys race saw Matt McClintock hit the mile in 4:56, he would run the fastest boys time on the day of 16:00.23, just missing the sub 16 mark. North Yarmouth cruised to the win in the team competition. Class B girls closed out the day with Abby Mace (Maranacook) bouncing back with a strong race, she would cross the line in 19:41.49. Greely pulled the upset for the team title behind 3 runners in the top 12. Silas Eastman (Fryeburg) closed out the race winners on the day taking his 2nd straight Class B title with a fine 16:18.11 performance. Falmouth showed why they are ranked #1 in the coaches poll as they had all 7 runners in the top 23.
Class A Girls: Abbey Leonardi set the course record with her 18:05.59 as she navigated the sodden fields & mud to cruise to her 3rd regional title in 4 years. Cheverus showed great quality as they went 2-3-4, 2 (Fiona Hendry), 3 (Shannon Conley) & 4 (Kiera Murray), this despite top runner Emily Durgin dropping out of the race after the mile. With Durgin out, Massabesic showed they have one of the top teams in the state as they went 6 (Gabrielle Johnson), 7 (Jocelyn Acheson), & 8th (Mikayla Frazier), they had all 5 scorers in the top 16. Cheverus got a big race from regular #5 Maddie Woods who finished 14th right behind Massabesic's #4 runner, while senior Lizzie Gwilym rounded out the 5 scorers for the Stags in 16th. The final score was 45-51, the closest anyone has been to Cheverus in the state of Maine in a few years.

Class A Boys : Scarborough's Nick Morris repeated as regional xc champion as he pulled away from a pack of 5 just after 1.5 miles as he gradually increased his lead. Morris crossed the line first in 17:03.3, 18 seconds up on a hard closing Chris Dunn of Kennebunk. Bryant Perkins (San) came on strong in the last mile for 3rd, as he got by Cameron Nadeau (Bid) in the final mile, Ben Allen of Portland rounded out the top 5. In the team competition Scarborough the top team in Class A all year repeated as regional champions as they were the only team to score under 100 points when they tallied 61, behind 4 of the top 15 overall finishers. South Portland had a strong pack with 3 in the top 17 to nab the runner-up trophy with 101, Massabesic was a close 3rd with 110. Also the top 7 in the race earned SMAA all-conference, while places 8-14 earned second team all conference honors, this is because the SMAA has no conference XC championships as all the team in the Western final are from the SMAA.

Class C Girls Meagan Thomas of Lisbon followed up her MVC conference title, with a Western Maine one this week. The senior from Lisbon covered the 5k layout in 21:11.60 to finish ahead of runner-up Natalie Bolduc of Dirigo(21:24.3) by 13 seconds. Sophia Thayer (Boohtbay) finished 3rd, with defending champion Martha Veroneau of Waynflete in 4th. Rounding out the top 5 was Hillary Detert of NYA (22:05.4). Defedning Class C state champion Merriconeag showed it'll be favorite to repeat next week as they scored just 41, which was 49 better than last year's regional champ Waynflete who tallied 90. Dirigo rebounded well from MVC to nab 3rd, and the battle for the last state meet spot went to NYA who tied with Monmouth the MVC champ, but advanced because of the 6th runner tie-breaker.

Class C Boys Mud wasn't going to stop Madison's Matt McClintock from going after the sub 16 mark, so as he always does he attack the race right from the gun, crossing the first mile in 4:56. Mud slowed him down a bit in the 2nd mile, but he broke away from the rest of the field and powered his way to finish, 16:00.23. He was just outside of that elusive mark, but in the process he repeated as regional champion with the fastest time of any boys runner that toed the line Saturday. Chase Brown of Boothbay tried to stay up with McClintock but the pace was just too hot, Brown nabbed the runner-up position for the 2nd straight year, his time was the 3rd fastest on the day. Jack Pierce (Merriconeag) had a strong run for 3rd, and the 4th fastest time of the day. Josef Holt of Telstar was 4th with Abshir Horor of Waynflete rounding out the top 5. North Yarmouth Academy had 5 of the first 17 finishers to easily win the team title with 59, Waynflete claimed the runner-up trophy with 92.
