Scarborough Girls & Sanford Boys on top in the SMAA

 

  The Scarborough girls defended their home turf as they tallied 93 points to best the field. The Red Storm did all this despite battling injuries to several key members, they were led by 2 record breaking performances in the 100m & 200m from Nicole Kirk. Kirk won the 100m in 12.48 bettering the 6 year old record of former sprint star Jennifer Pierpont (TA), she added a 25.28 in the half-lapper which broke her own record from 2011 25.58. The Red Storm got another win from senior Catherine Bailey in the pole vault who clared 10 ft which broke the conference record (formerly 9-9 1/2-Leigh Maniscalco (Gorham-2008). Speaking of senior Emily Tolman added a fine performance in the 400m, clocking 58.16 to cross the line first. Scarborough also won the 4x100m relay in come from behind fashion in 51.54.

  The Gorham Rams edged ahead of Thornton Academy  with a strong performance in the 4x400 to greab the runner-up trophy. The Rams got a pair of wins from Sarah Perkins 100m hurdles & 300m hurdles, Perkins broke the year old league record of Peyton Dostie (45.32) with a fast 44.49. Sarah's time in the 100m hurdles was a new state leader, 15.18. She was also runner in the 200m breaking the previous record in the process. Racewalker Katie Flanders led a 1-2 finish for Gorham with a league record 7:41.71 performance.

Thornton Academy finished in 3rd less than a point behind Gorham. TA got it's only win of day from long jumper Marie Vermund 16-7, Vermund who has been battling injuries this spring is getting healthy at the right time.

Biddeford's Ashley Belanger added to her Class A lead in the shot put with a heave of 36-10

The Athlete of the meet went to Sarah Perkins. League awards for the regular season went to Nicole Kirk-Outstanding Track Performer & Katie Shapiro-Outstanding Field Performer.

 

Sanford closed the SMAA meet out on a strong run to pull ahead out the competition to claim the top spot. Sanford won the boys 200m, triple jump, & 4x400 to tally 87 points, 9 ahead of runner-up Gorham.  Sanford was led by Alex Shain who won the 100m (11.34), long jump 21-5 3/4 & triple jump 42-8 3/4. Another standout was senior Dan Webb who won the 200m in 22.94, Webb also ran a great anchor leg on the 4x400m relay to close the meet out in a state leading 3:29.1. Webb & Shain also ran key legs on the 2nd place 4x100m team (44.81).

Gorham had several strong performances throughout the day. The Rams got a 1-2 finish in the racewalk with senior Nate Bucknell taking the top spot. Senior distance runner Jesse Orach ran a great last lap in the 3200 to cross the line first 9:54.90.  The Rams also got a strong performance from Kyle Nealey in the shot 51-5 1/2, which was good for 2nd. Brandon Cushman added a runner-up finish in the 300m hurdles 41.04, the mark is Class A #2.

Other standouts performances came from Bryan White of Deering who won the shot with a Class A leading 51-9 3/4. The Cheverus 4x800 won & set a new state leading mark of 8:11.66. Thornton Academy took the 4x100 in a state leading 44.77. Jeremy Collins broke 40 seconds in the 300m hurdles 39.92 to win the event. Brady Foshay ran 1:58.98 to win the 800m. Biddeford's James Ociti broke 50 seconds in the 400m, 49.98


Sanford's Alex Shain was named the Outstanding Performer of the meet, while he also picked up the regular season Field Event performer. Dan Webb (Sanford) & Ethan Beaulier (Noble) shared the Outstanding Track performers of the regular season.
