Bethanie Brown is a senior at Waterville HS. She ran under 5 minutes for the mile last winter becoming the first Maine HS girl to do so. Brown was an All-American in the 2 mile indoors, and capped off the outdoor season with a state all-time best for 1600m. follow Bethanie as she competes during the indoor season.
Happy New Year to Everyone! The USM relays were a great way to end the year! I’ve heard about that meet since freshman year, but I’ve never been to it before this year. I guess it is pretty far away from us. It felt especially far away while traveling back in the snowstorm Saturday night. Going not much more than 45 or so on the highway, it seemed like a never-ending bus ride. We got to the high school just before 10:00 pm. Since we left the high school Saturday morning at 9:15, it was a pretty long day. By the end of it we were all quite sleepy!
However, I thought it was really exciting to be able to compete against all of those southern Maine teams. I felt almost like I was at a meet out of state yesterday, just because there were so many teams there that I don’t see regularly. In Indoor Track, I start to recognize people on the teams that we see over and over again, like Messalonskee, Erskine, Oceanside, Lawrence, Winslow, etc. I’m not used to seeing all the southern Maine kids. I think it’s really awesome to have an opportunity like USM relays occasionally to compete against them though. I know that one thing I always wanted was to get to run against Abby Leonardi on the track, because I thought that would be really cool. Unfortunately, because we’re so far away from each other (Kennebunk is about an hour and a half away from Waterville), I never got to be in a track race with her. I guess that’s why I was so excited to be able to race against her at the Festival of Champions last year in cross country!
Also, a cool surprise for me was that my cousin, Morgan Richmond, from Windham was at the Track meet yesterday. It’s the first time we have been able to see each other race. Our teams were actually in the same heat of the 4x200. We didn’t go head to head because we ran different legs, but I guess that’s good in some ways…she would have beaten me since she’s a strong sprinter!
Overall, I really enjoyed being able to see the great competition yesterday at the meet. I really enjoyed watching the 55 dash finals. I’m always impressed by that race, because it’s so technical, and the people running it have such a short time to prove themselves! At least in the mile, I have about 5 minutes. I could make a little mistake here or there and no one would really notice!
I’m enjoying the mile a lot this year, and I’m excited to run it again. I’m not sure I’ll get to run it again for a couple of weeks, but I’d really like to shave some time off and go sub-4:59. I think I can do it, so I’m excited to give it another shot!
