Cape Elizabeth girls have a new coach at the helm this fall with Andrew Lupien taking over, Lupien the indoor/outdoor track distance coach has previously coached at South Portland High School from 2007-2011. The Capers are on their 4th coach since 2010, and hopefully Lupien can bring some stability back to one of the proudest programs in the state. Cape Elizabeth finished 5th a season ago in the Class B state meet, they return their top 5 from a year ago, and are poised for a breakout out season if they stay healthy. Cape last won the state meet in 2009 has high hopes for this season. Coach says "I think we come in with enough talent to do pretty well. The girls have been working hard all summer and they seem really motivated to do well this season."
"We have great senior leadership on this team, and they have really worked hard to get the team into shape this summer. Their dedication is unmatched and they have really brought the team together. - Lupien said of when speaking about the strengths of his squad. Cape has looked good in it's two preseason races as they have shown quality and depth. Senior Rhoen Fiutak has won both races, she was 30th at states last fall & the #3 runner for Cape. Add in sophomore Emma Shedd who has yet to race but has plenty of talent, she was 11th in the state meet as a freshman, along with junior Sam Feenstra (23rd in 2013) plus a healthy Eva Brydson gives the Capers plenty of quality. A name to watch out for will be Liv Palma a sophomore who transferred Lincoln-Sundbury in MA, Palma has great track credentials, she ran a 5:17.43 for 1600m last spring. The other returner Emily Faria is a strong runner as well, she placed 56th at last years state meet.
While Lupien says "This summer we kept things really low key. We did a lot of core strength and easy runs. Now that preseason has started we will begin to add some workouts to our practice routine." He has Cape Elizabeth looking like the team to beat in Western Maine Class B, they open the regular season on Thursday at Wells.
No question to win a state title Cape will need to remain healthy, and beat the 3 time defending champion Mt Desert Island in the process, both are easier said than done, but certainly don't count them out.
Coach Lupien Says...
"I think we have the talent to do extremely well this season. The girls need to stay focused and motivated for the next 10 weeks or so, and if they can do that I think we have a real shot to bring home some hardware this season."
