Scouting Reports Cape Elizabeth boys

As part of our xc coverage we are taking an in-depth look at some of the top teams around the state by doing a team scouting report.

The Capers are coming off back to back Class B state titles, and enter 2014 looking to add a third in a row to the trophy case. Last fall Cape Elizabeth stood tall to an outstanding effort by Ellsworth to add the 10th state title in school history to move the program the #1 in all-time Class B state championships on the boys side. Graduation hit Cape hard with 5 of the top 7 from a year ago gone, so they have an uphill battle to title #11.

Back for Cape is senior Mitchell Morris who finished 8th a season ago running, he is the top returning runner in Class B from last year's state meet. Also back is senior Kyle Kennedy 12th at states, and 4th fastest returner. Morris & Kennedy give the Capers one of the best 1-2 punches in the state. With the rest of the state's team graduated, they will rely junior Jared Duperre & a pair of sophomores Mac Huffard & Alex Depke to fill out the top 5 this fall.

"We are a young squad this fall with just 3 seniors, and just two of our top 7 back from last year; out of 18 runners on the team, 12 of them are sophomores & freshman" Coach Veilleux said. There maybe some early growing pains for Cape Elizabeth with the youth movement, but in the end they will be counted on if Cape is going to win a third straight state title this fall.

Coach Veilleux Says...

“We graduated several runners from one of the most successful Cape teams in history. We have two top returners in Mitch and Kyle, who should contend for a top five finish in Class B. After that, we have just two more varsity runners back from last fall. Barring injury, our top five will be very good and the team once again put in a strong summer of training to prepare for the season. We're young, so the room for growth is large. Our goal will be ready to run our best in the championship meets. We may not look like one of the best teams early in the season, but when it matters most, I feel this squad is good enough to run with anyone in Class B."
